Arc II — Stand The Wall

The Consent Floor

PD 606 · Day 3 afternoon → Day 5 evening — the surgeon who kept consent as a floor through the negotiation, the stage teaching, the brace, and the departure

The first request Renata made of Mnehmos on Day 3 afternoon — after the four Sebastopyr anchors had been freed and Ardin's runner had been sent and Severa had walked back to council with the deal terms — was that the architect be received as a patient and not as a prisoner.

She had not phrased it that way to be diplomatic. She had phrased it that way because the medical floor she had been holding since the hospital intake bay on Day 1 was the floor under everything the cohort was doing now, and it would not hold if the architect crossed the chalk line and went into a cell instead of a bed.

Mnehmos accepted the framing without amendment. Then it is your hand at the gate when he arrives, he said. I will not enter the room until you tell me he is fit to receive me.

Pia ran the hospital. Renata took the guest wing as a clinical ward.

She wrote the intake protocol in her own hand on the slate Vass passed her. Three sentences. Architect to be examined for fitness on arrival. Any condition discovered to be communicated to him first, the council second. Consent for any procedure to be obtained as in any other case under the chapter house's medical authority. Severa countersigned. The intake protocol went into the council ledger.

I — Midnight, Ardin's Hand In Hers

Ardin walked through the breach at 00:14 on Day 4. He was ninety-one years old. He looked at Captain Aldis and said, in Sebastinum, I am here under my own authority, and Captain Aldis nodded and the flag went down.

He came directly to the chapter house. Renata met him at the threshold of the guest wing.

She did not bow. She did not curtsy. She did the thing she did with every patient she had ever taken in. She offered her hand at the level a clinician offers a hand to a person who is about to walk into a room they have never been in before.

Ardin took it.

His hand was steady but cold. The cold was the cold she had been reading in the dawn-cold patients since Day 1 — the bind-cold, the carrier-cold, the cold of a body that is carrying a working for someone else. Ardin's body was carrying forty-six of those workings. She read his palm temperature against her own and the differential was eleven degrees.

She said, plainly: Walk with me. We will sit in the wing. I will examine you. I will tell you what I find. Then I will tell Mnehmos.

He walked with her.

The examination ran twenty-two minutes. Pulse 86, irregular under stress; pupils responsive; gait stable but compensating left; skin temperature consistent with bind-burden eleven; cardiac murmur grade-2 systolic that had been there for years and was not load-bearing on this week's work. Renata noted everything. She told Ardin everything as she noted it. He nodded at each item.

When she was done she said: You are fit to receive teaching. You will need to eat before each session and rest between them. Your apprentice in the hospital cot is stable. If you wish to see him before he wakes, you may. He cannot consent yet, so I cannot bring you into the room — but I can bring his chart to you.

Ardin asked to see the chart. He read it the way a man who had taught medicine in Ostrog forty years ago read it. He handed it back. He said: Tell him, when he wakes, that I am sorry. Do not tell him sorry for what.

Renata wrote it on her own slate. She did not improve the truth.

II — Tibor's First Day Awake

Tibor woke at 23:30 on Day 4, drank broth, looked at Renata, and slept again.

He woke again at 06:40 on Day 5. He sat up. He said, in Halis-accent Sebastinum: Where am I. Renata told him. He said: Am I bound. She told him no — Mnehmos had freed his bind in the night as a side-effect of the second-stage teaching, and the lens-watcher in the next building had verified the bind was gone. Tibor put his face in his hands for a long minute.

Renata did not touch him. She sat in the chair beside the cot and waited.

When he looked up he said: Is Ardin alive. Renata told him yes, in the wing next door, teaching Mnehmos's school the unbind technique. Tibor said: He was — kind to me. Renata said: I know.

Then she said the next thing because the next thing was the thing the hospital had taught her to say in every case where a patient woke and did not yet know whose authority their body was now under.

You are in Sebastopyr. You are a patient under my care. You are not a prisoner. You are not a witness compelled. When you are fit, you may speak to whomever you wish and you may leave. Until then your body is your own to choose what to do with. I am here to keep it that way.

Tibor cried for the first time since the morning Mnehmos had keyed the lens on him. He did not say what he was crying for. Renata did not ask. She put a clean cloth on the bedside table and let him take it himself.

She left him with Pia at 07:00.

III — The Race, From The Hospital Side

Renata was at the hospital when Cole's runner came past at 11:34 with the codex prefix.

She did not need to read the prefix to know what it meant. She had been a senior surgeon long enough to know that runners with sealed codex slates moving fast meant the schedule had just changed. She told Pia: Move Tibor one corridor over. I do not want him in line-of-sight to the cistern. Pia moved Tibor. She also moved the three dawn-cold patients still in the ward and the two cardiac monitors and the bed-bound carrier who had not yet been freed because Ardin had not yet reached her name in the catalogue.

The hospital was ready by 12:00.

At 14:32 Cole's second runner came past. Working changed sweep to fix.

Pia and Renata held the hospital. Pia ran the wards. Renata sat in the chair beside Tibor's new bed in the corridor across from the chapel and read aloud from the chapter house's copy of Calabrese's Letters to a Younger Surgeon, because Tibor had asked for something to listen to that wasn't a prayer.

At 15:00 Tibor stiffened in the bed. He said: Something just changed. Renata read his pulse. It was the same as a minute ago. She said: Yes. Mnehmos braced. You felt him. Tibor said: Through what? Renata said: He was your master's neighbor in the working for a long time. You are part of the same shelf. Sometimes the shelf shakes. Tibor said: Oh. He let his shoulders down. She kept reading.

At 15:36 Tibor stiffened again. Renata held his hand without asking. She did not pretend to know whether Tibor felt the compel-working through Ardin's bind-line — the bind was gone, but the residue of nine years of service-binding does not go in a day — or whether he felt it through Mnehmos's brace, or whether he was reading the cohort's collective tension off Renata's own pulse the way a body that has been a carrier for nine years learns to read everyone in the room.

She read for twenty-eight minutes. Calabrese's eighth letter, on the discipline of admitting an error to a patient's family in the same hour you discover it.

At 16:04 Tibor's shoulders dropped. He said: It stopped. Renata said: Yes. They sat.

At 17:00 Tibor said: I would like to see Ardin. Renata said: He is awake. Can you walk? Tibor said: I think so. He could.

She walked him to the wing.

IV — Four Sentences, Then East

When Tibor said Master, I am going with you, and Ardin said Yes, Renata was standing in the doorway of the room because she had brought Tibor and she was not going to leave him until she was sure he had made the choice as a man and not as a patient.

He had.

She stepped back into the corridor. She wrote four sentences in her own hand on a small slate and gave them to Tibor before he walked out east:

Tibor: you were not bound when you made this choice. You owe Ardin nothing. You owe me nothing. You have the right to walk back. Renata.

She gave the slate to Tibor and Tibor read it and put it in his shirt pocket against his chest where his mother had taught him to keep papers that mattered. He nodded at her. He did not say thank you. He did not need to.

He walked out at Ardin's shoulder at 17:30. The breach closed.

⟦ XP +80 · Renata · the four-sentence slate is the consent floor made portable; the apprentice walks out into a 48-hour mission carrying a written ladder he can climb back on at any time ⟧

She closed the ward at 19:00. Pia took the night shift. Renata went to her bunk in the chapel-side dormitory and slept eight hours for the first time since arrival.

She did not dream of Daniel. She did not dream of the Naples bus station. She did not dream of the hospital. She dreamed of a four-sentence slate in a young man's pocket walking east in a road she could not see.

When she woke at dawn she made tea and stood in the chapel doorway watching the east-facing window of Cole's room across the courtyard. Cole was already up. He was not at the window. The lens was at rest. The thread was quiet.

Day 6 began.
