BASTION

The last city · PD 606

Bastion is the last city.
It summons heroes from every kind of world.

Their powers arrive intact. Nothing is balanced. The city only records what survives. Every number is real; the dice are honest; the protagonist can actually lose — and did. Read it as a novel, or check the math yourself.

The lives

Cole Maddox
Paladin · Biography #2
contemporary Earth — an Arizona copper mine
A foreman who keeps the iron alive, taken mid-shift into a stone cathedral — where a System he didn't know existed catalogues him and rolls him a class he'd never have picked.

Mnehmos
The Summoner-Priest · Biography #1 (the devlog)
Sebastopyr — the last city, the cathedral
No one watched the choosing. He looks across the void at the souls he might call — an operator at a Morenci copper mine, a surgeon, a mason, a surveyor, a woman holding a bread line — and decides, by name and nature, whom to tear loose. Then the System speaks back.

Bohdan Cerny
Mason · Biography #2
Contemporary Earth — a wall mid-repointing (origin unspecified)
His body went to one knee before his mind decided. The slab is sound. The mortar is foreign. The brass nail-line bears something the System refuses to name. Six centuries old by feel, the tooling marks line up to high-Gothic Moravia — impossible, and possible. Stone under load does not lie.

Renata Salk
Field Surgeon · Biography #2
Contemporary Earth — a trauma surgical room (origin unspecified)
She arrives with her arm still up from the gloved-and-ready posture. First instinct after any shock is a count: bodies, then risk, not names. The System refuses to forecast motive or allegiance. Good — the engine will not let her romanticize.

Wren Adebayo
Quartermaster · Biography #2
Contemporary Earth — a bread-line in crisis (origin unspecified)
She arrives, and within seconds she has re-positioned — laterally, to the angle from which she can see the dais, the doors, the cohort, and the personnel of the chamber simultaneously. The count resolves: 31 souls. Two summoners with tremor-hands flagged WATCH. An attendant places a stone slate within her sightline. She does not pick it up. It is enough that it is there.

Yuki Aritomo
Surveyor · Biography #2
Contemporary Earth — a rain-soaked survey expedition (origin unspecified)
The rain came with her. The cold is in the cloth. She fixes the floor before she looks up — keystone-aligned slabs, brass nail-lines, seven steps from dais to floor as geometry not yet traveled. The Lay on Hands buys a margin, not a cure. Her first word in this world is 'thank you.'

The first cohort

One rite. Many souls, chosen on purpose. The Operator was not summoned alone — these arrived with him, and each is a life still to be written.

How this is made

Bastion runs on a real game engine. Souls are LLM-driven players inside it; they petition a System that is the physics of the world, and the System commits — or refuses — against a gated ledger. The chapters you read are the transcript of committed events, not authored ahead of them. The inline [OOC] readouts and the collapsible Engine Log under each chapter read the same committed rows — so the numbers in the prose and the numbers in the audit always match. The full method →
