Arc II — Stand The Wall

The Race

PD 606 · Day 5 · 11:35 → 17:30 — six hours in which the deal closes inside its own window and a man walks out of Sebastopyr to die freeing his binds

The runner came at 11:34 with Cole's prefix.

⟦ THIRD-SCHOOL AWAKE · HUNT-WORKING · 4-6h TO PENETRATION · NOT AT DOOR YET · NEED THE ENGINEER'S CALL ⟧

Mnehmos was walking through the chapter-house cloister when the runner reached him. He stopped under the third archway. The arithmetic was already settling, the way the arithmetic settled in his school's tradition — the trained voice that ran the numbers and the costs in the second half of every breath without asking permission. Deepen the wards. Strike Vasko. Decoy. Let the deal expire as shelter. Race the teaching.

Five doors. Four of them led somewhere that broke the frame the deal had been signed under. The fifth one was the hard one.

So the hard one.

He arrived at Cole's door at 11:35 and gave Cole eight seconds. Hold the lens on Vasko. The instant he shifts sweep to fix, find me. He turned and walked straight to the cistern.

The cohort's logistics had to fit themselves around what was about to happen. Severa would write. Vass would slate. Bohdan would witness the arch. The young woman who had carried the message from Ostrog yesterday would carry runners west. Renata would mind Tibor and the carriers. Yuki would map the routes for Ardin's runners. Wren would carry the grid for six hours of clean signal.

It was the schedule of a man who knew his cohort was capable of holding a line they had not yet been asked to hold and trusted them to find their own marks when he laid down the spine.

⟦ MNEHMOS · BURDEN +5 HOLDING · STAGES 3 AND 4 PENDING · 4h 15m TO 47-HOUR CLOSE · 4-6h TO VASKO PENETRATION · DECISION: RACE ⟧

I — Stage Three

Ardin was already at the cistern. He saw Mnehmos's face from twelve paces and stood. He had slept five hours after the Marja release. He was at burden seven, breathing well, holding his own water.

Mnehmos said: We are opening stage three now. Stage four after. We are doing both today. The man hunting you will find you between fifteen-thirty and seventeen-thirty. We have until then to put the technique in your head whole.

Ardin said one word: Begin.

The release-technique is the third stage because the first two — preparation invariants and bind-mathematics — are the floor on which it stands. The release motion itself is two parts. The bind has its own resonance window; the operator does not measure it; he listens for it. When it comes, the operator does not pull the bind off — he steps out from underneath it the way a man under a leaning beam steps out, leaving the beam to find its own ground.

Mnehmos had been taught this technique by a woman who was now nine years dead. She had taught him the day she taught him the answer to the question of what to do when the working asks you to lie. The same answer for both: do the thing that lets you keep the room you are in.

He taught Ardin the way she had taught him. Standing. No diagram. Verbal. He had Ardin repeat each move three times in the air before Ardin tried it on a bind.

Ardin asked nine questions in two hours and eight minutes. He asked them clean. Each one was specific. Each one was a thing a man with forty-seven binds in his book had needed to know for years and never been told. Mnehmos answered eight of them plainly.

The ninth question was who taught you this technique.

He refused.

He did not soften the refusal. He said:

"I will not name her. If Vasko ever takes you, the name is a lever. The technique you will carry. The lineage will not. That is part of the discipline. I am sorry."

Ardin did not press. He nodded once. He understood.

The test of stage three was Rolan of Cislis, eighteen kilometers west, a bind Ardin had laid in PD 597 in a working that Mnehmos in his own youth would have refused. The runner left at 12:30 with the preparation-invariant slate and the new bind-mathematics. Rolan released at 14:08. Cole's lens saw the line go slack across the lower cloister window. Ardin felt his burden drop by one.

⟦ XP +90 · Mnehmos · stage three transmitted clean; the refusal of the ninth question preserves the lineage for whoever comes after Vasko ⟧

II — Stage Four, And The Sweep Becomes A Fix

Stage four is not a technique. It is a catalogue.

Ardin opened his book of forty-seven binds from memory and walked Mnehmos through the thirty-eight that remained. Some had been laid through wedding rings. Some through a child's first knife. Some through the doorpost of a mother's house. The Brunna bind had to be released through the carrier's own steadied pulse; the Tomas-and-Liesel pair had to be released within nineteen seconds of each other or both carriers would die; the Hana bind had to be removed by a witness pulling the ring from her finger with her consent.

For each bind, Mnehmos walked Ardin through the variation: which preparation invariant was load-bearing, which step of the bind-mathematics could not be skipped, what the carrier had to be told before consent. Ardin wrote none of it down. The catalogue was his already; he had carried it for nine years. What he had not had was the language for how to release each entry, and Mnehmos gave him that.

At 14:32 Cole's runner reached the cistern.

⟦ WORKING CHANGED · SWEEP → FIX · VASKO HAS NARROWED TO WITHIN 200M OF THE CHAPTER HOUSE ⟧

Mnehmos did not stop teaching. He said, low, to the runner: Tell Cole I felt it. Keep teaching. The runner left.

He had felt it twelve seconds before Cole's message arrived because the wards he had laid had begun to sing the high thin note that good wards sing when something competent has begun to read them. He kept his attention on the catalogue. Ardin was at the Brunna bind. The Brunna bind would not wait.

⟦ TEACHING CONTINUES · BURDEN HOLDING · WARDS BEGINNING TO BE READ ⟧

III — The Brace

At 15:00 the wards cracked.

Cole's lens read it plainly: Vasko's working pierced the ward-refraction and read Ardin's signature sharp at the cistern's location. The cleanest reading possible. Vasko would now know where to push.

Mnehmos felt the crack as a cold line down the back of his throat. He has me, he thought, and then not yet. Brace.

He burned +4 burden in twenty-six seconds. Not the gradual loading of careful work — the dump of a man pulling everything down off the shelf because the next minute is the only minute that matters. His burden went from +5 to +9. The braced ward closed around Ardin's signature like a fist closing around a coal. Vasko's read went from sharp back to blurred but Vasko now knew where to push.

Ardin saw Mnehmos's face change. The catalogue paused at the Tomas-and-Liesel pair. Ardin said:

"You braced."

Mnehmos nodded.

"Then I have until you cannot hold. Continue."

The Tomas-and-Liesel pair took six minutes. The Hana bind took four. The remaining twelve variations took twenty-two minutes between them — the last twelve were the ones Ardin had already practiced in his head while waiting for the cohort to arrive at Ostrog two years ago, the ones he had thought through and could have done if he had ever been allowed to refuse.

At 15:34 Stage Four landed.

Ardin closed his eyes for two seconds. Opened them.

"I have it whole."

⟦ STAGE 4 PURCHASED · 15:34 ⟧
⟦ 47-HOUR CLOCK · 46h 49m ELAPSED · DEAL FULFILLED INSIDE THE WINDOW WITH ELEVEN MINUTES TO SPARE ⟧

⟦ XP +110 · Mnehmos · stage four transmitted; the deal terms complete; the technique entire in the next school for the first time since PD 423 ⟧

IV — Twenty-Eight Minutes

The compel-working hit at 15:36.

Mnehmos felt it land on Ardin the way a man feels a hammer strike a struck bell beside him. Ardin staggered. The wards convulsed. Vasko's working was no longer trying to read Ardin; it was trying to pull him east physically, or kill him if he resisted.

Mnehmos brought his bracing to bear directly on Ardin's body. The wards stopped being a perimeter and became a personal shield around the architect. His burden went +10, then +11.

⟦ BURDEN +11 · AT THE LIMIT OF SAFE CARRYING FOR HIS AGE ⟧

The Severa-and-Vass line ran underneath the brace because Severa had the council writ in her hand and the writ kept the chapter-house secular protections in place. Bohdan held the arch's structural witness so that if the brace cracked the building would not. Renata had moved Tibor to the room one corridor over for cardiac monitoring. Yuki had her slate-map on the table with all the carriers Ardin would still need to reach written in her own quick hand.

Ardin lasted twenty-eight minutes.

He stood the whole time. He answered three more questions Mnehmos asked him — small ones, drills to keep his attention on the work and off the compel pulling at his spine. Mnehmos's voice was the only thing keeping Ardin in the room and Ardin's voice was the only thing keeping Mnehmos's brace from buckling.

At 16:04 Ardin passed out.

Mnehmos caught him because Bohdan was already moving when Ardin's knees went. The compel-working broke at 16:04:18 — not because Vasko had stopped working, but because Ardin's unconscious body no longer presented a signature Vasko could fix on. The braced wards had done their work. Vasko was reading dark.

Mnehmos sat down on the cistern floor with Ardin's head in his lap and breathed for the first time in nine minutes. Bohdan put a cup of water in his hand. Severa took the dictation forward. Vass closed the day's slate.

V — Tibor, And East Into The Dusk

Ardin woke at 17:00.

Renata was at the bed. Pia was there. Tibor was in a chair beside the bed in a quilt Pia had put on his shoulders, his color the color of a man who had been twenty-two years old for one day longer than he had expected to be twenty-two for.

Ardin looked at Tibor for the first time in five days. The look between them was a long one and was not in any language the lens registers. Then Ardin sat up. He drank water. He looked at Mnehmos.

"The deal is whole. I have the technique entire. I will return to my army before dark. I have approximately forty-eight hours before they execute me. In those forty-eight hours I will free as many of the remaining thirty-eight as I can reach. I estimate twelve to fifteen. The rest will go to Vasko. I am sorry. It is the best I can do."

Mnehmos accepted the estimate. He did not soften it. He said: Tibor.

Tibor stood out of the quilt and the chair both. He said, to Ardin:

"Master. I am going with you."

Ardin said: Tibor —

Tibor said:

"You taught me for nine years. You taught me the rite. You taught me service-binding. I will help you free the twelve. Then I will come back here, or I will die there. I have decided."

Ardin's eyes wet for the first time on screen.

"Yes."

At 17:30 Captain Aldis opened the breach under signed flag of architect departing under his own authority. Ardin walked through. Tibor walked behind him. Ardin turned at the chalk line and bowed to Mnehmos. The bow held longer than protocol. Then he walked east into the dusk with Tibor at his shoulder, both of them moving at the pace of men who knew the road they were on.

Mnehmos watched them until the dusk took them.

Then he sat down on a crate Captain Aldis dragged over, and Bohdan put another cup of water in his hand, and Severa took his other hand the way she had taken his hand at the morning of his ordination forty-three years ago, and the day was over.
