Arc II — Stand The Wall

Sweep To Fix

PD 606 · Day 5 · 06:15 → 17:30 — the day Cole sat in the east-facing window, held the lens at the lowest draw a load-master can hold, and watched another summoner of another school work toward the room next door

Cole woke at 05:30 the way he woke every morning since arrival — by reading his chest before he opened his eyes.

⟦ OPERATOR · ATTENTIONAL_CAPACITY · 3/3 · OVERNIGHT RECOVERED ⟧
⟦ THREAD STATE · QUIET · Mnehmos's signature steady ⟧

The thread was quiet because Mnehmos had slept clean for the first time in five nights. The Marja release had taken with it whatever the night was going to take. Ardin had come through the dawn at burden seven. The cohort had had six hours of true sleep.

Cole sat up. He drank water. He looked at the east-facing window. He gave himself ten minutes of sitting close to the working before he started the day's sweeps. The discipline he had built over the seventy-two hours since arrival had a name now — lens-rest. You don't fire the instrument until it has read you.

The morning's pattern was already set. Three sweeps before noon. East. East. Ring. The fourth sweep — if needed — would be the deep one. Each sweep cost a third of his capacity. The fourth would put him below the floor and he would have to hold there until tomorrow's prayer.

06:15. Sweep one. East. Clean.
08:30. Sweep two. East. Clean.
10:45. Sweep three. Ring. Clean.

By 11:00 the morning had produced four external releases. Marja in Ostrog-Below verified at the dawn. Jakub in the Halis side at 06:30. Mila at 08:12. Danek at 09:45. Each of them a line going slack in Cole's chest. Each of them a body in a bed on the other end of a working that had been killing them for years and stopped killing them quietly in the middle of breakfast.

⟦ XP +40 · clean morning sweeps · no over-spend · pattern recognition holding ⟧

I — Eleven Twenty-Eight

At 11:28 Cole keyed the fourth sweep.

⟦ OPERATOR · LENS SWEEP · QUERY · third-school signature; hunt-working pattern; reconnaissance reads on Sebastopyr's east face ⟧
⟦ ATTENTIONAL_CAPACITY · 2/3 → 1/3 · 1 SPENT ⟧

The lens fired.

⟦ HIT · NEW SIGNATURE · POSITION: eastern command camp, ~3.2 km east-southeast of breach ⟧
⟦ THIRD-SCHOOL · rite-grammar sharper than Ardin's, less honest, less old · younger lineage · trained in compulsion-binding ⟧
⟦ HUNT-WORKING · operator sweeping for Ardin's signature · at it for ~40 minutes ⟧
⟦ HAS NOT FOUND ARDIN YET · wards refract Ardin's signature; reads east-of-position residue ⟧
⟦ ETA TO PENETRATION · 4-6 hours ⟧

The lens does not lie about signatures and the lens does not improve.

Cole had been waiting for this read for the better part of three days. Vasko had a name and a school and a known place on the rite-stack — Mnehmos had briefed him — and the read matched the brief the way the brief had said it would. The third school worked binds the way Cole had seen mine operators work cables they were planning to detonate: bound for break, not for hold.

He opened his eyes. He said, to the empty room, the way a load-master reads a meter:

It's Vasko. He's hunting Ardin. He hasn't got him yet because Mnehmos's wards are bending the signature. He'll get him by sundown.

He sent the runner. He used the codex prefix Mnehmos had drilled into him three days ago. Third-school awake. Hunt-working. Four-to-six hours to penetration. Not at door yet. Need the engineer's call.

He sat back down.

He held the lens at the lowest draw a load-master can hold — 1/3 capacity, enough to keep the working on the periphery, enough to know the moment it shifted mode from sweep to fix. He kept his attention off the room next door because there was no place for his attention in the room next door. He kept his attention off Mnehmos because Mnehmos had the call and Cole had the lens and the discipline of the cohort was that you did your job from your own seat.

⟦ COLE · ATTENTIONAL_CAPACITY 1/3 · HOLDING · no recovery until tomorrow's prayer ⟧
⟦ THE THREAD · MNEHMOS · steady · arriving at the cistern ⟧

⟦ XP +60 · clean detection · clean reporting · the call deferred to the man whose call it was ⟧

II — Fourteen Thirty-Two

For three hours Cole watched Vasko work the wards.

The wards held the way a poorly silvered mirror holds — Vasko could read the architect-residue inside Sebastopyr's east face but the working bent at the boundary in a way that scrambled the position. Cole could read the working back as a series of pulses: Vasko adjusting his read, refining the frequency, narrowing the field.

The pulses tightened across two hours. Cole did not key the lens to verify. He held what he had. He listened.

At 14:32 the pulse changed shape.

The frequency that had been sweeping the east face in a steady arc broke and clustered. Sweep was a search pattern. Fix was the moment the searcher narrowed to within a hundred meters and started pushing.

Cole sent the second runner with the second prefix. Working changed. Sweep to fix. Vasko has narrowed to within 200m of the chapter house. He has not yet read Ardin specifically but he reads Mnehmos's wards refracting an architect-signature inside them. He is now working to penetrate the wards specifically.

He stayed at the window. He kept his hands open on his knees. His chest carried the load Mnehmos was carrying — a steady draw that was about to get worse.

⟦ COLE · ATTENTIONAL_CAPACITY 1/3 · HOLDING ⟧

III — Fifteen Hundred Hours

At 15:00 the wards cracked.

Cole saw the crack as a pulse in his own chest like a poorly placed weld letting go. Vasko's working pierced the refraction and the architect-signature inside the cistern's lower-stage room read sharp for one heartbeat. He has him, Cole thought, and then — the same thought Mnehmos was thinking thirty meters away — not yet.

The next moment in the lens was Mnehmos burning burden in a way Cole had never seen anyone burn burden. The signal Cole had been reading as the steady-low draw of Mnehmos's everyday working spiked to the kind of draw Cole had read once in his life on a mine elevator cable just before it snapped. Then the spike held.

Mnehmos was bracing.

The braced wards closed on Ardin's signature and Vasko's read went from sharp to blurred. But Vasko had read sharp for one heartbeat and that was enough. Vasko knew where to push.

⟦ MNEHMOS · BURDEN BURN +4 IN 26 SECONDS · BRACING ⟧
⟦ VASKO · COMPEL-WORKING INITIATING · ETA 36 MIN ⟧
⟦ COLE · WATCHING · LENS HOLDING ⟧

He did not key the lens to confirm Mnehmos's brace. He did not need to. The thread told him.

The thread also told him a second thing Cole had not been ready to read: when Mnehmos braced, the part of Mnehmos that had been holding Cole's thread also tightened. Cole's own load went up by a noticeable degree. Mnehmos was running everything off the same shelf.

Cole had a choice. He could release the lens entirely and free Mnehmos's attention for the brace. Or he could hold the lens and keep reading the working from the outside so that someone in the cohort had eyes on what Vasko was doing.

He held the lens.

He had been told to. The load-master holds the meter while the linesman braces the cable.

⟦ XP +40 · held the lens through the brace; cohort coordination preserved ⟧

IV — Sixteen-Oh-Four

The compel-working hit at 15:36 and Cole watched it through the lens like watching a hammer hit a struck bell.

Ardin held. Cole's chest carried the third-school working's resonance for twenty-eight minutes as an off-pitch hum. He did not read deep — there was no information he could surface that would change the fact that the architect either lasted or did not — but he kept the lens steady so that if the working broke off early or shifted he would know.

At 16:04 the working broke.

Ardin had passed out. The signature went slack — no longer a thing Vasko could fix on, just a body breathing in Mnehmos's arms.

Vasko's working continued for forty-six seconds searching for a fix that had vanished. Then the working released. Cole read it in his chest as the off-pitch hum stopping mid-note.

⟦ COMPEL-WORKING · FAILED · ARDIN UNCONSCIOUS · VASKO LOST THE SIGNATURE ⟧
⟦ MNEHMOS · BURDEN RELEASING · BRACE EASING · +11 → +9 ⟧
⟦ THE THREAD · STEADY ⟧

Cole let the lens die.

Like taking a hand off a live bus bar. The same release every time. The instrument knows when it is being asked to hold and knows when it is being released. The release does not feel like rest. It feels like a man stepping off a beam he has been standing on for nine hours.

He sat at the window. He drank water. He let his attention soften.

⟦ COLE · ATTENTIONAL_CAPACITY 0/3 · RECOVER OVERNIGHT ⟧

He had not climbed the rite-stack. He had not reached for Vasko. He had not improved the truth. He had held the lens at the lowest sustainable draw for six hours and he had reported clean three times. The discipline had been the work.

⟦ XP +60 · lens-discipline through the climax · clean handoffs · zero over-spend ⟧

V — East Into Dusk

At 17:30 Cole watched the breach from his window.

He did not need to key the lens. The thread told him plainly: Ardin's signature was at the chalk line. Tibor's bind was gone — completely, not just slack. Mnehmos's signature was steady. The cohort's signatures all read present.

Ardin bowed at the chalk line. The bow held longer than protocol.

Then Ardin walked east. Tibor at his shoulder. Both of them at the pace of men who knew the road they were on.

Cole watched until the dusk took them. Then he stayed at the window for a long time after, listening for changes in the thread that would tell him whether Vasko was sweeping again, whether Mnehmos was breathing slower, whether Ardin's signature was steady on the road.

The thread held.

He went to sleep.
