Arc II — Stand The Wall
Ardin of Ostrog
PD 606 · Day 3 · 16:38 → 16:46 — the architect on the other side made the call eleven hours early; the war changed shape in nine minutes
The runner reached him at 16:39:14.
He was in the chair at his window. Severa was two paces behind him because she had not yet finished telling him to keep sitting. The thread in his chest had been pulled tight in a way it had not been pulled before — not the tug of the cistern reaching, not the slow pull of a held bind, but the tug of another hand on the same cable — and Mnehmos had known what that meant before the runner finished the sentence.
He stood.
⟦ MNEHMOS · RISE · BURDEN +5 HOLDING · WALKING NOT RUNNING ⟧
He walked the corridor with Severa half a pace behind him at the cadence a man uses when he intends to arrive still able to think. Burden +5 makes a corridor longer than it should be. He spent four of the corridor's seconds reading the strain pattern in his own chest and knew, by the third one, that the architect on the other side was not attacking. The architect was holding the lens open. That was diplomacy, even if it was diplomacy done with a clamp.
He arrived at the hospital intake bay at 16:40:38.
Cole was in a chair, lens-locked, eyes blank. Renata had the bay. Pia was at vitals. Ela was on the cot watching with her hand at her sternum. The architect, when he spoke, was using Cole's mouth.
The word he used first was brother.
⟦ ARCHITECT NAMES MNEHMOS AS PEER · CLASSIFIES BY OFFICE · CLOCK STARTED AT 8 MINUTES ⟧
I — The Three Gates
He stepped into Cole's sightline and kept his hands visible. He did not clear the room. If I answer you at all, I answer before someone who can count what bodies cost. Renata stayed. Pia stayed. Ela stayed. The hospital remained a hospital.
He asked for three things before any question:
The architect's name.
Whether Tibor heard.
The question, last.
The architect gave him all three in the order asked, and in the order asked the architect gave him what Mnehmos's instinct had already known: this was a man who had been doing the work for decades, who carried his own burden at eleven, who was looking at the end of his road and asking for a hand to put his books in order before he could no longer hold a pen.
Ardin. My name is Ardin. I have not used it in conversation in twenty-three years. My city no longer exists; my school is what remains of it. I am the last.
Mnehmos heard Ostrog in the man's mouth before Ardin said the word. The fall of Ostrog had been a story for the children of Mnehmos's grandfather-tradition. The school that fell with it had been the last school to know the techniques the Sebastopyr reformation of PD 480 had codified — the school Sebastopyr's own school had once partly been.
⟦ ARDIN OF OSTROG · LAST OF HIS LINEAGE · AGE 91 · BURDEN 11 · 47 BINDS PLACED · 4 IN SEBASTOPYR · DYING ⟧
The question, when it came, came plainly:
I am asking for the lives of forty-seven people. I am asking for the death of my own school's last secret. I am asking for time I am not certain I have. I do not lie about any of this because I have nothing left to win by lying.
He wanted the unbind technique. The technique Sebastopyr's school had developed in the reformation. The technique no other school in the wider world had ever asked for and lived to learn. The technique Mnehmos had used twice in his career and had been taught at L9 priest-engineer rank.
If Mnehmos taught Ardin, the war's intelligence backbone broke today; the four Sebastopyr anchors went free; the forty-three other Ardin-bound souls survived Ardin's death-by-old-age in the spring; the school that fell at Ostrog acquired a method it had not had since PD 423.
If Mnehmos refused, the four anchors stayed bound until Ardin's death; the forty-seven died with him; the eastern army inherited a younger and uglier architect named Vasko within a week.
The clean answer would have been refusal.
Clean answers are a luxury purchased with other people's dead.
⟦ XP NOT AWARDED (L12 character) · BURDEN AT +5 HOLDING · THE COUNCIL'S RATIFICATION IS THE STATE LEDGER MNEHMOS IS WRITING AGAINST ⟧
II — The Counter
He did not refuse. He did not surrender. He did the engineer thing.
He proposed exchange, measured and witnessed.
He named, in two paragraphs spoken plainly into a hospital bay where a surgeon and a senior nurse and a freed anchor were the witnesses he had brought, the terms:
I will not pour an unbinding whole into one failing body and name that stewardship. I will teach in courses, under witness, against performance.
You release the Sebastopyr four now. You cease architect-work for the eastern army now. Severa will record both.
Then we begin preparation of the clean cistern.
You will learn. Tibor will learn under oath and witness as well, because if you die before the work is done I will not have the remaining forty-three die with you for the sake of a sealed school-secret.
I give no written copy. I teach by stages. Each verified release purchases the next stage. When the last of your forty-seven is unbound, the method is fully yours, and not before.
He stopped there. He did not improve the truth.
Ardin breathed. Four seconds. Then accepted.
The Sebastopyr four released between 16:44:14 and 16:44:31. Cole's lens watched the chalk-lines slacken one by one. Ela on cot 4 made a small sound that was not pain. Mark Toth, two corridors of city distance away in his clerk's office on the east curtain, sat down on a crate next to a mason he did not yet know had been hand-picked for the day they would be in this room together. Agata Nemec at the bell tower stopped where she had been standing, and her rotation partner — who was Pia's cousin and had been working hospitals through three sieges — caught her arm before she could fall. Libor Reznik at Halis Gate sat down on the stones in front of his post. The grain runner Wren had dispatched at the cohort's first reckoning — L. Mareya's brother — saw it from the dispatch wagon and put the observation on the slate before the man's color came back.
Four lives saved at the same minute. The architecture of two months of war broke in eleven seconds.
Mnehmos was still standing.

III — The Clock
Ardin had one more thing to say before the line closed. The army he served did not know he was dying. The army he served did not know he was negotiating. If they learned, they would kill him within forty-eight hours and install Vasko of the third school — younger, healthier, no honor in him at all — and the deal Mnehmos had just sealed would collapse, the forty-three remaining bindings would die with their architect, the eastern line would be inherited by a man whose signature Cole's lens had not yet seen, and a new and uglier siege would begin within a week.
So the clock was forty-seven hours and twelve minutes from 16:45.
Then Ardin released the lens.
Cole sagged forward. Renata caught the chair angle, not Cole's body. The thread in Mnehmos's chest dimmed to a brightness that read as engaged but unstrained — the first time it had been at that reading since the Tug.
Severa, behind him, said one word: Council. Then she turned and ran.
Mnehmos stayed at the threshold for two minutes more because his burden was at +5 and he did not want to fall in front of the chair where Cole was breathing himself back into his own mouth.
When he turned to walk, Bohdan was already in the corridor coming the other way, with two things in his hands — a slate and a flask — because Bohdan had read the morning's load through the corridor floor for nine hours and had known what the afternoon would cost.
He took the flask.
He drank a measure he would not have drunk on duty.
He went to find Severa.
IV — The Books
The devlog row for this afternoon, written when the day stopped being today's:
ENGINE IMPROVEMENT: The unbind technique has been agreed to transmit in stages to a second school for the first time since PD 423. This is not a rite change. It is a SECRET change — a thing this school has held for a hundred and twenty-six years on the argument that the technique kept Sebastopyr's binds safer than they would have been if any other school could undo them. The argument was always partly true and partly a courtier's argument made in a room with a fire and good wine. Today the argument cost forty-three lives.
HONEST CRUNCH: Ardin did not lie about a single load-bearing fact. The lens read his rite signature, his burden, his age, his school's lineage, his apprentice's tears. He could have lied about any of these and bought himself room. He did not. The Honest Crunch tradition of Sebastopyr is what permitted a man of a different tradition to make the same wager, and Sebastopyr's books now carry a row he wrote with his own honesty.
DOCTRINE: Refusal of teaching is no longer a default move. The cost of refusing must now be named before the refusal can be honored. The cost in this afternoon's case was forty-three lives. There will be afternoons when the cost is one life and the technique is the only thing in the room worth more than that. We will be in that room. We will know what we are doing by what it costs.
PRIESTLY REGISTER: Brother. He used the word brother. I did not refuse the word. I made his terms my own and added the witnesses he did not ask for. We are not the same office. We are the same office.
BURDEN: +5 holding. Will tick +1 when Ardin enters Sebastopyr at midnight tonight because the rite-stack will read the entrance. May tick +1 again at the first stage of teaching if the cistern preparation pushes me past the next threshold. I will not refuse those ticks. They are the state cost the council ratified at 08:22 and they are mine to carry because the seat I sit in is the seat that signs the receipt.
:::bubble who="Mnehmos"
Severa. I need the chapter house. I need a runner to the breach. I need Pia at midnight. I need Bohdan as the structural witness because the cistern preparation has to satisfy him before it satisfies me. I need Cole rested by the first stage. I need Renata in the room because she is the only person here who has counted what bodies cost in the same year she met me.
I need eight hours of sleep tonight after the parley and before the first teaching stage and I am not going to get them.
Call the meeting.
She did.
