Arc II — Stand The Wall

The Second Bind

PD 606 · Day 3 · 05:31 → 06:45 — the morning Cole's lens found the row he had not asked for, and the boy on the far end said please

The thread woke Cole at 05:31.

It did not pull. It brightened. The kind of brightening a load reading takes when somebody else's hand has been on the cable for half a minute and stopped pretending not to. Cole lay in the bed in the small room they had assigned him and listened to the thread instead of the dawn and decided two things in the order he always decides them: this is bad, and I am going to look at it before I let it be worse.

⟦ OPERATOR · ATTENTIONAL_CAPACITY · 3/3 · OVERNIGHT RECOVERED ⟧
⟦ THREAD STATE · BRIGHTER THAN BASELINE · steady ⟧

He sat up. He drank water. He did not look at the line yet. He gave it the same five minutes he had given the brass nail-line on the wall the morning he learned to read brass nail-lines — five minutes of doing nothing except sitting close to it so it would know it had been seen.

By 05:48 he had read enough of his own chest to know the strain was not on him. The thread was anchored in him, but it was being pulled on at Mnehmos's end. The cable was loaded. The fault was somewhere on the other end of the line and that other end was, as far as Cole could read it, walking around in Sebastopyr's city limits at a height roughly equal to Mnehmos's window.

He keyed the lens.

⟦ OPERATOR · QUERY · directionality + recent strain + load path for: thread state, overnight Vas drain, east-gate false-horn pattern ⟧
⟦ ATTENTIONAL_CAPACITY · 3/3 → 2/3 · 1 SPENT ⟧

I — The Row He Did Not Ask For

The lens, given an honest question, surfaces an honest answer. Cole had spent eighteen years in mines reading honest answers from instruments that had no reason to be polite, and the lens was the same instrument by a different name.

The answer came in three vectors pointing east.

The thread strain was reading east. The unattributed six-grace Vas drain overnight had drained east. The 04:50 false-horn pattern at the east gate — nine consecutive mornings, always the same minute — sat at the 1.4-minute offset from a resonance window the lens recognized from the Tug.

Three vectors converging at the same point. Two hundred meters either side of the breach in the east gate.

And then — because Cole had asked for the load path, and the lens does not lie about load paths — it showed him a row he had not asked for.

⟦ NEW ROW · OBSERVED · SECOND BIND ⟧
⟦ TERMINUS A · inside Sebastopyr · NOT Mnehmos · NOT Cole · lower cloister · human heart not known to Cole ⟧
⟦ TERMINUS B · outside the east wall · ~600m past the breach · human heart Cole has never seen ⟧
⟦ THE SECOND BIND IS STRAINED · the city-side terminus is taking the strain · for at least 9 mornings ⟧
⟦ NOT MNEHMOS'S WORK · rite signature does not match · OLDER · or FOREIGN ⟧

Cole opened his eyes.

The thread in his chest was not the only one in Sebastopyr.

The cable was a network.

He thought, for two seconds, about walking to the east gate.

He thought, for one second, about saying nothing.

Then he did the load-master thing and went the other direction at the right speed. Bohdan. Find Mnehmos. Tell him second bind, lower cloister to east breach, not his work, being tugged from outside. I'm going to the city-side end now. Do not let anybody pull on anything.

II — The Anchor's Name

The city-side terminus was at the hospital.

He took the cloister stairs at the speed a man takes stairs when a body on the other end of a line he can see has been waiting nine mornings. He did not run. Running was a kind of pulling.

By 05:56 he was at the hospital intake bay. Renata was there. Pia was there. The femoral patient from yesterday morning — Ela, mason's apprentice, twenty-four, the patient Renata had stabilized with Pia's help at 09:54 the day before — was sitting up on cot 4. Her color was good. The bind crossed her chest as a clean chalked line in Cole's lens.

Renata saw his face before she saw anything else.

She did the thing senior surgeons do when they have already trained themselves to refuse a panic in a junior's footstep: she said Cole — pause and held the room for the medical priority before the political one. Cole stopped at the threshold. Hands open. Boots planted. He kept his eyes off Ela because Ela had not consented to be looked at by an Operator's lens, and a lens is a touch.

He said it low, to Renata, in the language she had built her morning in:

This is not a bleed-out problem. Not the way it looks. It's containment. Nobody touches unless she asks or you order it. Nobody isolates her. Ela is the city-side anchor of a foreign bind. Enemy-side work. Mnehmos is on his way here now. His word from upstairs was: do not pull on anything.

Renata held. The morning ran on her cadence after that.

⟦ XP +50 · clean handoff under load · medical authority preserved · consent floor honored ⟧

Mnehmos arrived at 06:01. Burden +5. He stopped at the threshold beside Cole. The thread in Cole's chest dimmed by two degrees when Mnehmos was in the room because Ela was sharing the load between her bind and his.

Renata held the conversation by the consent gate the way only Renata could have. She asked Ela. She gave Ela the words someone has information about the cold-before-dawn episodes you reported. Do you want Mnehmos to speak to you now, with us staying here?

Ela said yes.

Mnehmos told her, plainly: a person outside the wall tied a working to her body about two months ago. We do not cut it. The bind is anchored through her femoral artery — the same artery Renata had repaired the day before. He did not improve the truth. He asked her what she remembered.

She remembered.

His name was Tibor. He came in from Halis. Halis papers, the foreman said. He worked the south wall with me for fourteen weeks. He was — kind. He prayed at the wrong hour by our calendar but the foreman said it was a Halis thing. He left two months ago. Walked off shift on a Tuesday. The foreman said deserter. I said he wouldn't.

She said the next part with her hand on her chest:

He brought me water the day I cut my hand on a chisel. He held the cloth to it. He said a prayer over it I didn't recognize. I thought it was sweet.

⟦ ANCHOR IDENTIFIED BY NAME · TIBOR · former apprentice · 14 weeks proximity ⟧

III — Please

Cole keyed the lens.

⟦ OPERATOR · PERCEPTION CHECK · 1d20+5 = 21 (nat 16) · SUCCESS ⟧
⟦ ATTENTIONAL_CAPACITY · 2/3 → 1/3 ⟧

What the lens gave him in two seconds:

A low room with a packed-earth floor. A converted granary, by the bearing-pattern. ~600m east of the breach. A boy on his knees with a slate that had Ela's name on it in script Cole could not read but the lens translated as her name.

Tibor was twenty-two. Cole did the math in his head — Ela had said fourteen weeks, the lens said not the architect, and the kid on the floor had a face that was not the face of a man who was winning the morning.

The lens registers reads. The lens does not register intent. But Cole had been a heavy-equipment man for sixteen years before he had been a Paladin for two days, and he could read a face the way the lens read load. Tibor's first true thing was — he tried to STOP.

He couldn't.

The lens showed Cole, plainly, that Tibor had his own row above him. A third terminus. The architect was behind Tibor on the rite-stack, not next to him. Tibor was a carrier. Tibor was the rite's mouth, not its will.

Tibor saw Cole. Knew what Cole was. Did not look ashamed. Looked relieved that someone else had finally read what was on top of him.

He mouthed one word, across the line, in a language the lens did not translate but the shape of which is the same in every tongue Cole had ever heard:

please.

Then the line went quiet. He had resumed the prayer. He had to. Whatever was on top of him would notice if he stopped for longer than a heartbeat.

Cole let the lens die. Like taking a hand off a live bus bar.

He reported.

⟦ THE ENEMY HAS AN ARCHITECT · THE WAR IS RUN BY SUMMONERS · BIGGER THAN THE WALL ⟧

IV — The Engineer's Call

Mnehmos heard the report at 06:09. He made the call at 06:10. He did not reach for the architect. He named the cost of the branch he did not take in the language of a man who had spent a career not improving the truth.

The reflex is to reach higher at once. Burden makes that reflex look like courage when, often enough, it is only waste. I will not spend that blind.

The four-priority plan he laid down was the cleanest plan the cohort had been handed since arrival:

  1. Severa is told first, in full.
  2. The senior priest-engineer council and city command are briefed at once after.
  3. Ela is treated as a consenting monitored carrier. Contained, not isolated.
  4. The other dawn-cold patients are identified and watched.

He authorized Cole to watch the line, do not climb the rite-stack again unless I order it.

He authorized Renata to hold the carrier alive, calm, and accompanied.

He went to find Severa.

The morning was over by 06:12. The day's intelligence work had produced more than the city had had in nine weeks. Cole sat on a chair Pia dragged over from the next cot. He did not look at the line.

He listened to Ela breathe.
