I — The Descent
I watch the dais as if the room itself is a compass I can tilt with my eyes.
Seven shallow steps. The stone takes Mnehmos's weight in a measured rhythm — a man who moves with the certainty of a clock's gear. The chamber's attention rotates toward him as he comes down, gravity behaving like a thing you can negotiate with a hand on a rope.
The instrument-bearing woman — still unnamed — steps toward the tremor-handed pair of summoners on the perimeter. Two faces made of held-back lines and the tremor of nerves that have been working too long. She does not run. People who don't run are already seeing what's needed.
I shift my gaze along the ledge where the slate sits within reach but not yet claimed. The headcount in my ribs is steady: five souls in the cohort, twenty-four robed summoners, two dais figures, attendants who move with the slow ceremonial ease of people who know the seal of a room better than their own names. The count is not merely numbers; it is a geometry I ride like a line drawn for me to follow.
The sightlines I chose keep the dais in view, the east door, the cohort, the summoner ring — and the slate on its ledge — all in a single frame. I am here to measure, not to narrate. I learn the room by counting, then counting again.
II — The Naming
The man on the lower step lifts his head enough to let the room settle into him. He speaks not as a rumor but as a boundary set with iron and ink.
Cole Maddox. Renata Salk. Bohdan Cerny. Yuki Aritomo. Wren Adebayo.
The names coil through the chamber, a measured syllable-bell. The cadence leaves nothing to chance, nothing to guesswork. The roster resolves: the four others I could only describe by posture and dust now have names spoken in a man's mouth. My own name lands fifth and last — a stake driven into the ground, but driven for me. Not the first or the privileged position. The last position, which is where a quartermaster belongs: when the count of the line is over and the line is closed.
I do not yet trust the mouth that names us. I will wait to see what provisional means in the way this room uses it.
I am Mnehmos. I performed the rite that brought you here.
You are in Sebastopyr. This chamber is in the Cathedral Sebastinum, above the Vas Halidani that holds the Grace I spent to bring you. The city beyond it is real. So are its risks.
The understanding that lets our speech meet is provisional. It will hold until the third day at evening.
The architecture clicks into language. The chamber I had only been able to describe by sight is now a room inside a building above a cistern inside a city — each layer named, each layer real. The exits I had catalogued remain unchanged: the east door still the main gate, the smaller door behind the dais still partially obscured, the NW passage still a different airflow. He named the city, not the doors. The doors I keep.
The deadline lands cleanly. Three days. Evening. I mark the hour in my head and let the numbers fall into place like pebbles in a dry stream. A deadline is not comfort; it is information.
III — The Slate
Then he addresses the attendants by name. Not their names. Mine.
Place a record-slate where Adebayo can see it; she will want to track the headcount before she trusts a single one of us.
The slate has been on the ledge since the first minute. I did not pick it up because I had not been given permission, by sightline or speech, to claim it. Now Mnehmos has named it as mine. He has read me. He has seen the reflex that kept me from lifting it before, and he has named the reason aloud: she will want to track the headcount before she trusts a single one of us. The fact that he said it out loud is itself an offer. He is telling me — telling the room — that I am to be the witness, and that he expects no trust earlier than it is earned.
I count again, not for the crowd but for the single thread that holds me to my own promise of control: five names, twenty-four robed figures, two dais figures, attendants in their lanes, the slate still on the ledge. The arithmetic still holds. The names now belong to faces.
The attendant who placed the slate stands where he placed it, neither approaching nor withdrawing further. He is waiting. Not for an answer. For the act.
I lift.
Not a quick grab. The decisive kind of lift you perform when you know you are not stealing a thing but taking your own instrument of knowledge. The slate is cold stone in my hand — heavier than the paper I came in holding, lighter than the roster it will replace. The ledge gives it up without ceremony. The room does not exhale; it does not change. The act is mine, not the room's.
I press it briefly to my hip the way I would press a clipboard, then bring it level. My free hand finds the chalk-stub the attendant had set beside it on the ledge. I do not yet write quickly. Quartermasters do not write quickly when the first marks set the discipline of every mark after.
I write five lines, in the order I heard them:
- Cole Maddox
- Renata Salk
- Bohdan Cerny
- Yuki Aritomo
- Wren Adebayo
Each name is its own line. Each line is its own boundary.
The slate is bound to me now. Not by magic, by use. I am the one who has claimed the tool; I am the one who has written the first marks; I am the one who will watch the headcount from here forward with a different eye than I had a minute ago.
I take a breath I did not know I was holding, and let it out in a slow careful exhale. The room remains exactly as it was: the dais, the tremor-handed pair being attended, the instrument-bearer at work, the robed summoners holding their stalls. Mnehmos stands at the foot of the seven steps with his attention measuring what the naming did. The chamber has not changed.
I have.

"editorial_note": "Agent draft introduced several canon contradictions that required substantial editorial repair: (1) called Vas Halidani a 'river' — corrected: cistern (per all other biographies and Mnehmos's own ch02). (2) Invented 'two main doors to the north and south; a narrow service passage along the west wall' — corrected: kept Wren's own ch01 catalogue (east door, dais drapery, NW passage). (3) Had Mnehmos's slate-placement instruction as 'words not spoken aloud, yet they travel across the chamber' — corrected: per Mnehmos's ch02 ledger, that line IS spoken aloud as an attendant directive. (4) Had the slate 'glow with a pale, ritual light' and 'written with light rather than ink' — corrected: slate is ordinary cold stone; bound by USE, not magic. (5) Had cohort 'positions' that contradicted other interiors (e.g. Bohdan 'near the tremor-handed instrument' — he is on one knee at the slab he was reading). (6) Trailed off into meta-commentary ('END OF CH.2 — THE SLATE ACCEPTED' as a literal in-doc marker). The clean version preserves Wren's best lines verbatim: 'I am here to measure, not to narrate. I learn the room by counting, then counting again.' / 'I lift. Not a quick grab, but the decisive kind of lift you perform when you know you are not stealing a thing but taking your own instrument of knowledge.' / 'The last position, which is where a quartermaster belongs.' Wren's tendency to drift into meta and fabrication on long-horizon outputs is now a known agent failure mode, logged for future invocations."
