I — The Descent

I keep my arm up.

Not because I'm dramatic. Because the body in front of me — the room, the moment, the order that hasn't yet stabilized — has taught my shoulder to hold tension while my mind counts. Palm-up is triage posture. It's also a flag: I am not idle; I am not finished; do not rush me into mistakes.

The dais man begins to move.

Seven shallow steps. The kind you can climb without strain — if you had the luxury of ignoring what the floor is doing. The chamber's center of gravity shifts with him, subtle enough to be missed by anyone who treats physics as background music. I don't.

I watch the nail-line in the brass, the way it changes feel as he crosses it. Cool. Then cooler. The air around my raised hand doesn't exactly "wind," but it becomes weighted. Like a stretcher being pulled a few inches closer.

I catalogue. Count. The room has bodies in it — more than enough for panic if I were the kind that got generous with panic. I don't.

What bleeds? What breathes? What is about to fail?

The two tremor-handed summoners are out at the perimeter, still upright, still trying to remain upright. Tremor comes in patterns. It tells you how stable the nervous system is, and whether the body is paying in the currency of future function. Their hands move like they're arguing with a metronome that won't obey them.

Beside the dais, the woman in attendance — the instrument-bearer, whose name I haven't been given — starts forward. Not toward me. Toward the tremor-handed pair.

Her feet are sure. She doesn't run. That's a medical tell. People who run are trying to avoid seeing problems. People who don't run are already seeing them.

I don't intervene. Not yet. Not until consent exists and until instruction gives permission space. Ceremony is a vector here — true — but right now the ceremony has already turned into triage. I let it happen. I let her work.

My role stays observational, not because I lack impulse, but because the room's command structure is changing with every step the dais man takes. If I push into it, I become another variable the attendants have to solve. Variables kill faster than blades.

The heaviness around the brass nail-line increases as he nears the floor. A few bodies adjust posture without realizing they're adjusting. Heavy equipment men — people who lift what's too heavy for sentiment — register changes in load-bearing physics before anyone explains them. One of them tightens his stance, knees softening the way you do when you expect an impact that won't come from a hand.

I keep my arm up.

My eyes move only where they need to: the nearest faces for breathing rate, the nearest torsos for discoloration, the nearest open mouths for wheeze and swallow pattern. The room is a roster. The triage order is the only name that matters until the address gives us more.

A bell doesn't ring. No one needs to announce. The dais man is almost down.

And then — speech as gravity.

II — The Naming

Mnehmos

Cole Maddox. Renata Salk. Bohdan Cerny. Yuki Aritomo. Wren Adebayo.

I don't flinch at my own name.

I flinch at the accuracy.

A stranger speaks it as if he'd been holding it behind his teeth until this moment. That implies selection. Selection implies purpose. Purpose implies constraint. Constraint implies we don't get to choose our own pace.

My gaze snaps once to the periphery, then back. I don't look for weapons. I look for mechanisms. The man on the dais knows my name because he has already read the room before I arrived in it.

He takes the next line of breath — one step more — and claims the chamber with it.

Mnehmos

I am Mnehmos. I performed the rite that brought you here.

The room exhales as one organism. Not relieved — aligned.

I keep my palm open, fingers extended, glove ready. My training doesn't allow me to interpret motive yet. Motive is sentiment's cousin. Sentiment kills reliably.

I don't die because I want to understand.

He continues, and the words build a map that my body can hold even when my mind wants to keep improvising.

The city name arrives like a landmark shoved under my nose. The cathedral. The cistern. The grace spent.

It's all real enough to matter.

Mnehmos

You are in Sebastopyr. This chamber is in the Cathedral Sebastinum, above the Vas Halidani that holds the Grace I spent to bring you. The city beyond it is real. So are its risks.

"Real" is an instruction to stop treating this as a dream triage. It means the physiological rules of this place are likely consistent enough to plan around. It also means the failure modes will be consistent enough to kill.

Then the bridge — language — becomes another time limit I can work with. I don't care what the words mean in the first five seconds. I care whether we can coordinate in the next hundred minutes without losing people to misunderstanding.

Mnehmos

The understanding that lets our speech meet is provisional. It will hold until the third day at evening.

Three days. Evening.

A deadline isn't comfort, but it's a tool. My kind of tool. I can build a plan around time remaining, even if I can't build one around certainty.

III — The Stand-Back

Now comes the part that matters to me personally: he instructs the room how to treat my body while I'm still doing triage in the only way I know — by keeping my arm raised, keeping my count active, and letting my hands finish their internal assessment without being interrupted.

Because I'm not just holding posture.

I'm holding a boundary.

Mnehmos

Stand back from Salk until she lowers her arm — she is finishing a triage from her own world; let her arrive in her own time.

I don't touch anyone.

Not even the nearest person with a look that begs for help. The chamber has just given me a directive, and the ethical floor is still intact: consent, space, permission.

I glance sideways — just enough to locate compliance.

An attendant stands in my peripheral, waiting. Not hovering. Not trying to steal my attention. Waiting like a competent nurse: ready to move when asked, ready to give space when needed.

My arm doesn't lower on a whim. It lowers on the completion of the count.

I keep the tension in my shoulder until I have the roster in my mind as more than shapes. I've watched the instrument-bearer move toward the tremor-handed summoners. I've watched the attendant's compliance. I've listened — meaning more than language — so I can tell when a body's rhythm changes from "being managed" to "being saved."

The tremor-handed pair are being attended. The room's center of effort shifts. The instrument-bearer's presence becomes the new priority in that corner, not because I decide it, but because the room is structured to follow the competent.

So I keep still long enough to see whether her hands find the right lever.

If she succeeds, I remain observational. If she fails, my hands become the second line.

Either way, my choice to wait isn't passivity. It's accuracy.

The count ends.

My arm lowers — slowly, deliberate, palm closing toward myself as if sealing an instrument. The attendant gives ground without being asked. The compliance is immediate, like a trained habit rather than fear.

My hands are still gloved. No one grabs my wrist. No one tries to "help" by touching first. Consent is respected because the dais man has named the boundary.

My eyes register what matters now that my posture is finished:

  • The tremor-handed summoners are stable enough to keep breathing without escalation panic.
  • The instrument-bearer is close — close enough to see skin color and observe how the tremor interacts with breath.
  • The room doesn't surge into intervention. People hold their lanes.

That's good triage behavior. It means we can triage with fewer mistakes.

I shift weight from my back foot to my front, lowering my center of balance the way you do when you prepare to actually work instead of merely signaling readiness.

A sentence forms in me: something about what I see, something clinical and brief. I don't speak it yet, because I haven't been handed the clearance to take over her work. I don't steal roles mid-salvo. I'm a field surgeon, not a hero.

Still — my mouth opens just enough to anchor myself in the room's new language of authority.

Renata

Noted.

That's it.

No gratitude. No questions with too much hope inside them. Hope makes you careless.

I can work with noted.

The roster becomes more than bodies when the System recognizes the names it previously hid. Now I have confirmation that the chamber's speech will align with the chart.

I let the instrument-bearer finish her first checks. My hands stay ready. My mind stays on bleeding and breathing, not on why Mnehmos chose five people instead of fifty. Motive can wait. Survival can't.

The language bridge deadline is spoken and therefore real; our coordination is time-limited. I need to use that time for triage decisions, not philosophy.

So I watch, and I plan how to step in without breaking consent or the room's command structure.

I don't need to know why this man brought us.

I need to know what fails first.

And right now? First things first: breath holds, tremor is being addressed, and the attendant has given me space until my hand lowered.

That is a working beginning.
