Arc I — Arrival

Vas Halidani

PD 606 · the Cathedral Sebastinum, Sebastopyr · minutes 5-15 after the rite closed

▤ Listen — narrated · echo

The limestone still hums under my palm — a long, slow exhale that never quite finishes.

Residual heat slicks the joint, but the real signal is colder: the grain inside the slab wants to creep, half a millimeter at a time, toward the brass nail-line that borders the dais. A floor can ask for relief the way a lung asks for air; right now the chamber is holding its breath.

Across the sight-line the man steps away from the throne-stone. Seven shallow risers wait for him. Their faces are polished smooth, but the treads carry new scuffs that read like yesterday. He puts his weight onto the first, and the whole place flinches.

I — The Descent

First step. Weight ~ninety kilos by the feel of the shock, evenly set, deliberate. The brass inlay that stitches the audience floor to the dais flashes warmer under the load, then lets go of it.

Second step. Half the leftover charge runs off him, down into the line, past my spread fingers. The nails settle — each tiny ring-crown reseating into limestone like a sigh translated to metal.

Third. The aisle's temperature curve drops again. The stone under my kneecap does not tighten this time; it absorbs.

Fourth … fifth … sixth … By now I can taste copper at the back of my throat. Air pressure equalizes against my eardrums: the room is closing the tab it opened during the rite.

Seventh. He reaches the floor proper. The echo of his boots arrives two heartbeats later, small but exact — like a hammer finding the right chord in a wall. The brass no longer shines with anything but reflected torch-light.

The slab releases its hold on my palm. My knuckles stay down a breath longer, checking. Nothing pushes back. Nothing lures downward. The masonry has gone honest again.

II — The Naming

The man turns to face us. His eyes track each of the five in turn. He does not rush the silence; he fastens it in place like a keystone.

Mnehmos

Cole Maddox. Renata Salk. Bohdan Cerny. Yuki Aritomo. Wren Adebayo.

My name lands third — weight of a tamped stone on fresh bed.

I answer without thinking.

Bohdan

Jsem zde.

(Here.)

The corner of his mouth shifts — whether at the Czech or the cadence, I cannot tell.

Mnehmos

I am Mnehmos. I performed the rite that brought you here.

You are in Sebastopyr. This chamber is in the Cathedral Sebastinum, above the Vas Halidani that holds the Grace I spent to bring you. The city beyond it is real. So are its risks.

The understanding that lets our speech meet is provisional. It will hold until the third day at evening.

He lifts two fingers; attendants step to the room's edges.

Mnehmos

Cerny will rise when he chooses; do not approach the slab he is reading.

The command frees a thin murmur among the attendants, like rope on a winch, quickly stilled.

III — Vas Halidani

Vas Halidani.

The name fits the void under everything, the way a vaulted cistern's curve carries both water and load. My palm had already mapped it: hollow cylinder, forty cubits deep, ringed with radiating galleries. Hearing the word drops mortar into every joint of the mental drawing. The plan is complete now — labeled, oriented, trustworthy.

The limestone under me feels different once named, as if legal title just changed hands from rumor to record. The structure no longer asks for relief; it knows its place.

My right knee straightens first. The left follows when the slab offers no objection. I press off the heel of my hand, print of brass dust left in my skin's whorls.

I stay inside the footprint the chamber assigned me. No one crosses the invisible cordon. Good.

The man — Mnehmos — lets his attention settle on each of us again, measuring what the naming did. His boots remain clear of the brass. The system hum that framed the rite is gone; only room tone now, and the memory of a charge that might have split stone had it not found a body to spend through.

I flex the fingers that held the slab. Fine tremor: nothing structural, just muscle letting go. The scent of lime paste still rides my cuff; across an ocean and a hot-month away, the wall I left unfinished calls me back. Here, the work is older and broader, and it may ask my tools soon enough.

For now I inventory silently:

  • Seven-step dais, basalt core faced in limestone.
  • Brass nail-line contiguous, twelve-millimeter proud of tread, thermal event finished.
  • Audience floor laid in six-by-six ashlar, good bedding, joints tight, ~600 years since primary set.
  • Sub-floor void: Vas Halidani cistern, calculus of load suggests substantial reserve drawn but not empty; hydrostatic pulse minimal post-discharge.
  • Cathedral superstructure: unknown, but vault stress transmits clean — no imminent failure.

All of it tells one story: someone built for centuries, someone else just shook the foundations, and my cohort stands in the after-ring like chisel-marks still warm.

I draw a slow breath, square to Mnehmos. The floor holds by more than reputation now; it holds by name.

I rest one hand on the hammer looped at my belt — not to draw it, only to remember who I am when stone speaks. The city is real, the risks are real, and the cistern below us has a name that already feels like history under pressure.

Whatever work waits beyond these walls, I will meet it on the level, eye, and plumb.

The slab agrees.
