Arc I — The Summoning

The Slate Fills

PD 606 · Day 1 · 23:42 → Day 2 · 21:14 — the night she did not reckon and the day she did

The first time the System tried to give her something she could not earn back, she let the slate stay blank.

The bread-line at four in the morning had a roster on it. The roster had thirty-eight names. She would feed twenty-six of them that day; the other twelve were on a separate slate at a separate depot that she would never see again because the world changed at 04:13 and she was on a cathedral floor in a city she had not had a name for, with her hand on a slate of cold stone, and three of the twelve names she could still read in the rain-blurred ink. Mareya. Onuoha. Frey. The other twenty-three were ink she had let the rain take.

Mnehmos offered to send the bread.

She did not say yes.

⟦ DEFERRAL 1 · SLATE BLANK · NO XP ⟧

The second time, it was 03:47 and the Vas had reached for one of them and she had been the lightest, which meant the cistern had thought the city could spare her, which meant she could not have answered the offer through the door without also answering the offer in her own chest. So she did not answer either offer. She wrote a mark. She did not say what the mark was.

Mnehmos sent the runner anyway. He said the offer holds through the wood and went down the corridor to find Cole and tell him a truth she heard sideways through the door, two halves of it she could not quite assemble: that Cole was tied to him, and that if the line parted they both died. The slate in her pocket warmed a degree she did not measure. The System made one more attempt to surface a row to her and then went quiet.

She thought she had refused the cost.

The cost had not been refused. It had only been deferred.

⟦ DEFERRAL 2 · SLATE STILL BLANK · NO XP ⟧
⟦ SYSTEM NOTE · the engine does not punish avoidance; it refuses to reward the rehearsal ⟧

The third time was at breakfast, when Severa read the runner's manifest aloud and the three names that survived the rain came out of someone else's mouth: L. Mareya. K. Onuoha. J. Frey. They were not names she had said. They had been said for her. The runner, Severa added without comment, had asked if there was a reply.

There was a reply. She could not say it.

She said nothing.

Severa watched her face for half a second longer than necessary, and did not comment, and went on.

The deal was put on the table. The other four asked their questions in their own voices and Wren — because what else was she for, if not the count — wrote a small mark on a slate, and did not name it.

Then the horns went.

I — Three Queues

She was in the common room with the slate when the work-horn landed. She was in the common room when the wounded horn followed it. She was in the common room when a runner who was not her runner came in with sweat that was not the sweat of bread.

Sister Severa says the granary at Halis Gate is one strike from a hole.

Halis Gate was where her three loaves had gone. Halis Gate was the gate that did not fall. The granary at Halis Gate was a building made of the kind of stone Bohdan would not have allowed under load if anyone had let him near it, and the load-master who would have shored it was dead.

The runner stood in her doorway with breath that was not enough.

Severa was asking her to OPERATE.

Not to record. To operate.

She had a list of the cathedral district's inner-depot stores. She had read it twice over breakfast because reading it was the kind of thing she did with her hands while her chest was deciding things. The two wagons she dispatched had grain enough for the noon redistribution shrunk by a third and the granary at Halis Gate kept open. Six minutes, two guards, one route. The runner left with the dispatch order and a hand on the doorframe she remembered shaking.

She wrote DISPATCH 09:33 · GRAIN · INNER DEPOT TO HALIS · 2 WAGONS · NOON REDIST -33% on the slate. Not a mark. A line.

⟦ ACTION TAKEN · SLATE: ONE LINE ⟧
⟦ XP +25 · operated under load ⟧

II — The Second Runner

Forty seconds later a second runner came in with a different sweat. From Pia. From the hospital. How many cots.

She did not stall. She did not write I am awaiting confirmed count. She wrote 2 COTS · HOSPITAL · IMMEDIATE · BACKFILL FROM EAST WING AT LIGHT and gave it to the runner and the runner sprinted out.

The slate had two lines on it now.

It would have ten by 11:00.

III — The Name She Could Read

At 12:30 the first runner came back. The runner who had taken the loaves. Sweat-soaked again, breath better than before. He brought a list of three names and stood in front of her like a man delivering a contract.

I am told to thank you, he said. I have a list of who I am thanking. Read.

The first name was L. Mareya.

The second was Adaeze — and the runner said that is my mother. She lived because the cot you sent was there.

The third was a name she had not seen in the rain.

She read them. All three. Aloud.

The slate did not glow. The chalk was warm in her cuff and the slate was the same cold stone it had been at midnight in her room when she had refused to mark anything. She wrote the three names below the dispatch line, in the corner where her hand had been ready to write for sixteen hours.

⟦ NAMES WRITTEN: L. MAREYA · ADAEZE [RUNNER'S MOTHER, ALIVE BECAUSE OF COT] · O. SEKOU ⟧
⟦ THE SYSTEM HAS NOTICED HER AGAIN ⟧

That was the reckoning.

It was not glamorous. It was a list of three names on a stone slate in a quartermaster's hand in a cathedral she had not asked to be in. It was the thing the System had been waiting for and not been able to demand.

She wrote YES under it.

Underlined twice.

⟦ FIRST RECKONING · LATE BUT REAL · XP +50 ⟧
⟦ WREN · QUARTERMASTER 1 → 2 · HP MAX +8 (rolled honestly) ⟧
⟦ UNLOCKED · "CONSEQUENCES KNOWN BY NAME" — the System will surface affected lives by name when she queries an allocation ⟧
⟦ XP +75 at supper · formal acceptance of ninety days ⟧

IV — Supper

At supper she said the words again, with a question mark she put there on purpose because she wanted them to know she was committing to the work, not the man:

I accept the ninety days and the Operator subsystem, and I will train successors.

The question mark was for whoever audited the slate later. The yes was for the room.

Mnehmos confirmed her training term as a method that survives a bad night and a tired clerk. Not charisma. Not memory.

Wren wrote it down on the slate at the table.

The slate fills.
