I — Re-position
The room returns to itself in a slow exhale. The rite closes; the air carries a cooling sigh across stone and brass as if the chamber itself were listening for what comes next. I am not the kind of person who waits for the room to tell me what to do; I count what I can see, then I decide the angle from which I can see all necessary angles at once. My breath steadies.
I shift 1.5 meters laterally — a measured glide along the edge of the inlaid brass nails that mark the floor's discipline. It is barely enough to change the line of sight, and yet it gives me the geometry I crave: a point from which the dais is visible with the two figures upon it, the big east door is in my peripheral, the robed summoners form a wide glimmering ring, and any quiet movement among them reads in their shadows. The room cools further as the vapor curls closer to the floor.
In my left hand I cradle the half-corner of a roster, the aging scrap from the bread-line world I left behind. The ink has run in places; the edges curl; the words are no longer words so much as little maps that used to be names. The page is a substrate now, a quiet chalkboard on which I can scratch a count without lifting my gaze from the distances that matter. The cuff of my right sleeve, crusted with flour from a former life, catches the light. I ignore the micro-dust on it; it is simply there, like a grain of memory that refuses to be brushed away.
From this angle I can see the dais and the doors in a single frame; I can also see the robed circle with a clarity that comes only from choosing a foothold that respects the room's geometry as a kind of clock. The two tremor-handed summoners catch my eye at once: a tremor runs through them as if the air itself had a tremor and passed it along their bones. I note them as WATCH, not URGENT. The System will not tell me what it means; it will simply require that I notice it and count it.
The large eastern door remains the room's true gate, a corridor's mouth that hints at outside weather and outside footfalls. Behind the dais, a smaller door lies partially hidden by drapery; the airflow there is different, cooler, a hint that a passage hides in that contrived shadow. A side passage NW of my position hums faintly with a different air — less stale, more purposeful.
The other figures in the dais space are tall, the robed line a river of cloth that shifts as they breathe. The woman beside the figure on the dais — she bears an instrument, its case and closed mouth part of the ritual's visible machinery — has already begun a quiet movement toward the tremor-handed group. I do not read purpose in it beyond the fact that she moves, and that movement has its own direction.
I do not crowd any exit or crowd the dais. There is no need to hurry, only to place my sight where it belongs.
II — Count
I let the room unfold in front of me but do not let the surface blur into a story I did not witness. The count must come from sight, not from memory's fog, and I will not allow the pageantry of ritual to erase what I know by lines and corners.
From this vantage, the numbers align with the chamber's surface truth:
- The cohort: five souls in the immediate circle, including me. Compact, careful, each one with the discipline of a hand that knows what to hold and what to drop.
- The robed summoners: twenty-four, ringing the perimeter. Each one a living tally mark in a long count that returns no names to my memory — only positions.
- The dais: two figures. One performs the rite's visible leadership; the other stands as the instrument-bearer. I do not name them; I describe them only by function and placement.
- An attendant moves at the room's periphery, near the NW side passage, carrying something I cannot yet read.
- The tremor-handed summoners: two among the twenty-four; tremor noted, not explained. WATCH is the label I affix to them. The instrument-woman moves toward them with measured purpose.
:::
The arithmetic was easy once I refused to confuse the room's rhythm with the ledger's old names. The surface is clear: 5 + 24 + 2 = 31 souls in the chamber. The attendant sits in the periphery of my count — present in the scene's memory, not in the tally. The two tremor-handed are within the twenty-four. The two figures on the dais count as the two additional bodies.
The instrument-woman reads the tremor-handed as if their hands speak a drift of their own, and she moves toward them with measured purpose. The tremor remains, a small weather within the larger air of ritual.
I recite the count quietly, softly, to myself: five, twenty-four, two, one, one. The numbers hold their line.
Thirty-one in sight.
III — The Slate
The room pauses a breath longer, as if listening for the moment when the rite's close becomes a new beginning. An attendant moves from the NW corridor with measured, almost ceremonial motion. In his hands he carries a small slate of dark stone — not a tablet, not a board, but a compact slate that has the texture of a tool designed to be carried by a single shoulder and laid upon a ledge with quiet authority.
He approaches a narrow ledge within my sightline — a shelf above the level of the floor that has the right height to make a non-invasive offering. He stops at a distance that respects the line I have drawn for myself; he does not crowd me, does not push into the space where I could lose the sightline I have chosen. He places the slate on the ledge with a precise, practiced motion, the stone catching a glint of light that seems to hold a moment of the room's attention.
At nearly the same moment, I hear the heavy-equipment foreman's voice through the chamber's cooling atmosphere — a voice that lands not as a command but as a note of information to fold into the count:
Everybody off the brass line.
The words ride a practical tone that suggests a kitchen rush, not a march. The line lands the way a cook's voice lands in a kitchen — informative, not punitive, a reminder that there are boundaries even as the work continues.
I do not feel a sudden need to move. The slate's presence is enough to shift what I know of the room's tempo, and I record it as such: the slate sits on the ledge, a dark steady rectangle that marks a new point in the room's geometry. The dais figures begin a motion I sense as a descent — the officiant's steps begin to descend, and the room's attention rotates toward that movement.
The instrument-woman, who has been moving toward the tremor-handed summoners, takes one more subtle direction change, as if she will be the axis by which the tremors are given form. The tremor itself remains, but the attention shifts toward the descending dais.
I do not lift my gaze from the ledge; I do not move. The slate's surface remains within my sightline, an object that has become both tool and symbol: a sign that the room's ritual is not a closed loop but a process that continues, with steps that must be watched, counted, and understood without surrendering the room's measured stillness.
I do not lift the slate. I do not pretend to know its content. It sits there, a record for the chamber's memory. As it does, the officiant's descent becomes a visible promise of what comes next. The chamber settles into a new cadence; the room's air, the room's light, and the room's people adjust to the slate's quiet weight.
I remain in place, my count intact, my gaze fixed as the stone slate sits on the ledge, and the first steps of the dais figure begin to descend. The surface tells me enough to hold, and I am careful not to read into anything beyond what is in front of me.

The prose's three-movement spine, the count math, the sightlines audit, the slate-as-tool-not-gift moment, and the convergence cues with Cole and Mnehmos were preserved verbatim. Some redundant paragraphs were lightly tightened to match the register of Yuki's and Renata's chapters."
