She arrives, and within seconds she has re-positioned — laterally, to the angle from which she can see the dais, the doors, the cohort, and the personnel of the chamber simultaneously. The count resolves: 31 souls. Two summoners with tremor-hands flagged WATCH. An attendant places a stone slate within her sightline. She does not pick it up. It is enough that it is there.

The Slate Accepted

She watches the descent from her chosen vantage; the count holds steady. Her name lands fifth in the canonical order — the roster resolves. Then Mnehmos instructs the attendants by her name: 'Place a record-slate where Adebayo can see it; she will want to track the headcount before she trusts a single one of us.' The slate has been named-as-hers. She lifts it. First marks: the five names. 'I am here to measure, not to narrate.'

The Slate Fills

She kept the slate blank for three turns. The first reckoning came too soon and she would not pay it. The second came at the door at 03:47 and she still would not pay it. The third came at breakfast as a list of three names she could read, and she did not pay it then either. The fourth came as the runner's mother in a cot the city would not have had if she had not finally said yes. Then she paid it.
