Load-Bearing

Cole eats with his teeth and not his eyes. The bread is brown, the cheese is sour-sharp, the bitter stuff in the urn turns out to be drinkable if you treat it like the coffee that gets brought to a mine site the morning after a wall sloughs and they need everyone awake. He treats it like that. He drinks two cups.

Severa says siege. Severa says ninety days. Severa says skill-fit. Severa says the load-master was somebody's husband and now Cole is in his chair without his permission.

Cole does the engineer thing.

I am not signing my name to a building I have not seen.

He says it plainer than that, of course — they are at a table, not a courtroom — but the engineer thing is the engineer thing. Inspecting is not signing, Severa answers. He nods. They walk.

At 07:12 he is on the east curtain.

Two hours' walk from a breakfast table, on a stone wall held together by lime and prayer, watching a mason cuff a twenty-two-year-old apprentice load-master for asking the wrong question about a brace. The brace is bad. The apprentice knows it. The mason knows it. Nobody has written it down because the last man who knew how to write it down died last Tuesday and they have not replaced him because the standing rotation does not produce replacements at this rate.

Cole writes it down.

He writes it down in plain Earth English and gives the slate to Bohdan, who is one interval south, and Bohdan rewrites it in the language of stone — corbel slip, four-to-seven, paired 4-inch timbers, oak wedges, no one beneath — and the apprentice copies that down on his own slate without being told. The apprentice has not been required to write anything down in a week. The apprentice has not been required to think. He is now, suddenly, required to.

He does the work.

This is what Cole is for. Not destiny. Not Mnehmos. The hole-in-the-roster shape of him.

The work horn lands at 09:14. Stand to your post. The wounded horn at 09:28. Wounded incoming. He has been on a haul road during a slide; he knows what the two-horn sequence is. He knows that the time between stand to and wounded coming through is the time you have to decide who lives.

He decides like a load-master.

The brace gets two hands committed because the brace is one bad strike from killing six. The masons not on the brace get told to back of him and low because they are not soldiers. The apprentice gets a spotter job because spotters survive at the rate of people-with-jobs and the apprentice will not survive at the rate of people-without-jobs. The apprentice does not realize, in the moment, that Cole has just saved him by giving him a task.

Cole does.

Then three men come over the parapet with bare swords and the world stops asking permission of him.

He has trained with the sword Sebastopyr gave him for exactly the seventy-three minutes between the inspection start and the horn. He swung it once at a sandbag. The sandbag did not move. The Paladin tag in the corner of his vision said PROFICIENT and Cole did not believe it because the tag had not been earned by anything he had done.

The first man comes at him fast, sword high.

Cole steps inside the swing because in a mine a falling rock kills you only if you stay where the rock is going. He steps inside and his blade goes where it needs to go and the Paladin tag was not lying.

The blade lands on the man's collarbone. He goes back a step. He is bleeding. He is still upright. Cole has time to register: this is not a sandbag. This man has a name. He will not have a name in five minutes. Move.

He moves.

The second man comes around fast and the edge of his blade finds Cole's leather above the collarbone and the meat under it. There is a line of fire across Cole's chest that the System annotates as 4 damage and that Cole's body annotates as enough. Far away, four hundred meters of cathedral stone away, Mnehmos goes cold under his own sternum and writes a row in his head: the bind carries ordinary harm; confirmed.

Cole, who does not yet know that, just shrugs the cut off and stays standing because standing is what he is for.

He goes back to the first man and finishes him.

The first man dies on his blade. Cole does not feel it. Cole feels the wall. The brace at his back, the two masons committed, the apprentice who has not yelled which means the falling-back crew has not folded, his own boots on stone he has been on for less than an hour. Stop the cascade first. The cascade is the man's life. The man's life has stopped. Now there are two left.

The System surfaces the row in his head — gentle, declarative, plain — Paladin 2. The way an outage-resolved confirmation surfaces at the end of a shift. He does not have time to feel the meaning of it. He has time to feel the capacity of it. There is more of him than there was a second ago. Some of that is HP. Some of it is the thing in his hands that the System has just unlocked. He does not know what to call it. He calls it the thing in his hands.

Then the second man swings again.

The blade goes in deep and Cole is, by the math of the morning, dead. The L1 Cole — the Cole who walked into this interval an hour ago — does not survive that hit. The L2 Cole, with the +9 HP that surfaced thirty seconds ago, has thirteen left. He stays up. He stays up by the margin of the System having marked him capable a half-breath before the blade arrived.

He does not have the breath to swear. He has the breath to call the thing in his hands up by name.

The Paladin tag in his peripheral lights brighter. The Sebastopyr-sword in his fist becomes heavier and somehow lighter, the way a torque wrench becomes a different tool when you remember it is also a hammer.

The radiant comes out of him not as flame, exactly — flame is what you get when something is burning, and Cole is not burning, Cole is in a stone hallway at thirty-four with a sword in his hand and a hole in his chest — but as a brightness that lands on the second man's chest the moment the blade does. The man's body forgets it was a body. The brightness goes through him cleanly. He falls without finishing the swing he was starting on Cole's flank.

The third man has been climbing onto the parapet and watching this.

The third man stops climbing.

The third man goes back over the wall.

Bohdan is at Cole's shoulder a second later with a wedge in one hand and a mallet in the other and a face that has just watched Cole do a thing that Bohdan, who has eaten lunch with five Paladins in his life and never wanted to be one of them, has read with the engineer's eye. He does not comment. He sets the wedge under the third-interval brace and starts driving.

The brace holds.

The corbel does not drop.

The crew that would have been crushed go home that night.

The all-clear rings at 09:38. Twenty-four minutes after the first horn. Pia gets to Cole at 10:20 with a kit and three questions and uses none of his Lay on Hands because his Lay on Hands is now five charges of something he might need for one of his masons later in the day and Pia would rather use her own kit on him than spend his.

She closes the cut. She tells him he is welcome.

He sits on the parapet with his back against an embrasure and the apprentice brings him water. The apprentice does not say anything. The apprentice is twenty-two and has not spoken since 09:14 and is going to be useful to this city for forty more years if Cole and his cohort hold.

Cole looks at the thread in his chest. It is faint at this distance. Mnehmos is, by Cole's read, all the way in his rooms five hundred meters away. He is, by Cole's read, alive. The thread does not pulse. It does not strain. It is the line between two men who are, by the rite's mathematics, the same man, and it has carried the morning's ordinary harm exactly the way Severa said it would: as cold under one chest while the other one took the cut.

He does not know if he believes the Mnehmos-is-also-me part yet.

He believes the line part. The line he has felt. The line did not lie to him today.

He stands up. The apprentice flinches because he thinks Cole is going to give him an order. Cole does not give him an order. Cole tells him to drink the rest of the water and finds Bohdan and asks him about the south curtain.

The wall has not fallen. The cohort has not fallen. He has not signed his name to ninety days yet.

But he is, by the System's books, Paladin 2.

The Paladin tag is no longer wrong. It is no longer a parts-number issued by something that did not ask him.

It is, now, load-bearing.
