Arc I — The Summoning
Anchor
PD 606 · Day 1 · 03:47 → 04:02 — the corridor outside the cohort rooms, five hours and change after the rite
The Vas hiccups at 03:47 and the room I am sleeping in stops being the only room.
For half a second the air is a corridor I have not stood in for fifty-two years. A vestry I cleaned candles in as a boy. The smell of wax under a winter wall. Then my own pillow returns, in a body fifty-two years older, and the System ticks me where the System ticks no one without permission.
⟦ MNEHMOS · BURDEN +1 (unattributed; cause: Vas reach-back during cohort settling) ⟧
⟦ VAS HALIDANI · 5,604 / 15,468 — unscheduled draw, 800 grace, no petition logged ⟧
⟦ COHORT BIND · STRESSED — HELD ⟧
I am awake before the burden tick finishes rendering, and I am out of bed before the second meter reaches me. I do not pull a robe. I do not light a lamp. I walk barefoot down the cold flag, past the door of the room Severa took for the night, and I run when I hear her come out behind me.
What I am running for is not a number. The numbers will arrive. The numbers always arrive. I am running because I know what the cistern just did and I know which of them it would have grabbed.
I — The Cistern's Reach
The Vas Halidani is not a god. It is a built reservoir. When a rite is committed against it, the rite takes its mass out of the cistern's balance the way a hauled bucket takes its weight out of a counterweighted well. The cistern adjusts. It always adjusts. The adjustment is below the threshold of any sense the city has ever instrumented for, because we built the cistern so that the adjustment would be below that threshold.
We did not build it so the cistern would never try to take its mass back.
When a rite reaches across worlds, the reach incurs a small, recoverable debt to the world it reached into. That debt is what summoned souls feel as the language bridge and the bind. The bind says to the cistern, no, this mass is mine now, do not try to balance against it. The cistern accepts the bind because the bind is what the rite produces in lieu of the missing mass.
What the cistern does not accept — what no rite I have ever read accepted in advance — is two of the same soul existing at the same time in different geographies.
The Vas judged Cole Maddox light. It judged him light because in its books there are two of him, and the lighter of the two is the one set down in a copper mine in a country that has not exchanged a single phoneme with Sebastopyr in any age the Vas remembers. So the cistern reached, briefly, to balance. The bind said no. The thread, which until last night I had only seen in the abstract on the rite's predictive layer, became observed.
The System surfaced the row.
⟦ COHORT WAVE c0407606 · BIND ROW · NEW ⟧
⟦ THREAD · MADDOX:4388bdee ↔ MNEHMOS:29171068 · OBSERVED · DISTANCE-INDEPENDENT ⟧
⟦ ENGINE NOTE: Prior cohorts carried this row latent. THIS row has been observed by an Operator-class subsystem on the held end. The row is now legible to both ends. ⟧
That last clause is the devlog beat I will write up in the morning if I survive to write up anything.
I have committed twenty-seven Vocatios in my career. Three of them produced summoned souls who were, by the rite's reckoning, also me — a wave is generous; the cosmos is large; the Vas can find a station of yourself in any sufficiently populated set of worlds and will, given the chance, because the bind costs less when an anchor recognizes its own. None of those three ever knew. The thread was latent. The bind held. The men I summoned lived their lives and died of ordinary things and the row sat in the rite's books in a register no biographer ever asked to read.
This one is observed.
The reason it is observed is the Operator's lens. Cole Maddox, born in a mine I will never see, was bound at his cradle in his world to a subsystem I would have given fifteen years of my life to install in mine. The lens reads what reads back. Last night, when the cistern reached, the lens fired without his asking — because the lens treats a Vas reach-back as a hazard and a hazard is what the lens exists to surface. And what it surfaced was the thread, and the thread, traced honestly, terminates inside me.
So the devlog row in the rite's books is new. I have summoned twenty-seven rites. I have never had to fill in thread observed. The column existed; it had never carried a row.
It carries one now.
II — What I Spent Aloud
By the time I am at Wren Adebayo's door I have decided I cannot do the priestly thing.
The priestly thing would have been to tell her the offer in soft words and walk away. The engineering thing — the thing I actually do — is name the bread-line three names she could still read, and tell her plainly that I have sent the runner with the loaves whether she answers or not, and that the answer is hers to give or to refuse. I do not ask for the answer through the door. The offer holds, I say. The offer holds.
Then I walk past her door because the bigger emergency is the man whose chest is hooked to mine.
I do not call ahead. I do not let Severa overtake me. I cross the corridor and stop where Cole and Renata can both see me from their doorways, and what I see when Cole sees me is the moment I have been bracing against for fifty-two years. Not this man. This kind of moment. The moment where the rite's quiet column has to be read aloud to the soul on the other end of the row.
He says, plainly: what am I tied to you for.
I say, plainly: anchor.
He says: what happens to you if the line lets go.
I say: I die. I add: because what is on the other end of that line is me set down elsewhere. Same soul. Different station.
Two truths. The System ticks twice.
⟦ MNEHMOS · BURDEN +2 (cause: voluntary reveal of bind-mechanics to held end) ⟧
⟦ MNEHMOS · BURDEN +1 (cause: voluntary reveal of soul-identity to held end) ⟧
⟦ TOTAL BURDEN THIS RITE: +4 ⟧
⟦ VAS HALIDANI · 5,608 / 15,468 (12 grace drained during the speaking — the truth costs the cistern to receive) ⟧
⟦ ENGINE NOTE: this is the most burden Mnehmos has carried in one waking period since PD 594, when he failed a salvage rite and watched the bound soul tear free in his arms. The burden is honest. He paid it cleanly. ⟧
What I did not tell Cole, and will tell him only when the prose between us has earned it, is that I have known this column would one day need a row since I was a younger man than he is now. The mathematics of the rite were always going to surface the thread eventually; I have spent a career not minding because no rite I authored produced an Operator on the bound end, and the Operator is what makes the thread legible. I have been a craftsman building the only kind of door that needed a different lock and never closing the door behind me.
Last night the door closed.
I am, plainly, relieved. I would rather pay this in the corridor at four in the morning than in a council chamber at a hearing. The cohort heard. The bound man heard. The truth is in their books now and not only in mine.
When the man set down in copper-country tells me I do not get to overwrite him with my name, I tell him yes. I tell him I will not pull on the line and I will not cut it and I will not spend his life in the name of Bastion or my office without his leave. That last is a sentence I have practiced for a different mouth in a different room for nearly two years. It comes out cleanly when it comes out at last.
Severa puts her hand on my wrist after that, because she has known me long enough to read what stride I left in. She does not soften her voice. You are going to your room. Now. I let myself be moved.
⟦ PACT · MADDOX ↔ MNEHMOS · LOGGED ⟧
⟦ PACT TERMS: no pull, no cut, no sacrificial decisions without leave from either end ⟧
⟦ PACT MUTUAL · BINDING TO ENGINE ⟧
III — The Devlog Beat
I do not write the devlog at four in the morning. I write it the next afternoon, when Severa has fed me twice and refuses to leave me alone with the rite's predictive layer because she does not trust me not to start a second tab.
The improvement to the rite's books, in plain language:
Old behavior: the rite committed a bind to the cistern and the cistern accepted the bind without surfacing the thread row to either end. The bind held by force of mathematics; the truth was carried in the predictive layer only.
New behavior: when a held soul carries an Operator-class subsystem, the subsystem can fire unbidden during a Vas reach-back and surface the thread row to its held end. The held end then becomes observably tied to the anchor end. The thread acquires a column the anchor is REQUIRED TO ANSWER TO if asked.
This is, by every standard a priest would teach you to apply, worse. The anchor was hidden for a reason: anchors that are known become targets, accusations, leverage. A summoner-priest with a publicly known thread to a summoned soul is a politician. A politician is not what the rite was designed to produce.
This is, by every standard an engineer would teach you to apply, better. The held end now knows the cost. The held end can negotiate the cost. The held end can refuse to be spent in the rite's name. The pact Cole demanded is binding in the books because the books finally show what was always true: we are tied, and our failures will kill each other.
I am both the priest and the engineer.
I am, this morning, relieved like an engineer.
In the priestly column I am paying my burden cleanly and Severa is keeping me away from the predictive layer because she does not trust me not to try to refactor the books while my burden is still ticking.
She is right. I would.
