I — One Knee
The world I belonged to smelled of lime and wet rope-work. This one starts colder, all mineral exhale and candle smoke. The chant still rings in the vault, but the stone beneath my soles is the thing that speaks loudest.
Boot-heel lands, and the slab tells me it was asked to carry weight no quarryman ever promised. It rings — faint, the way a header whispers when a joist lets go two floors above. Reflex drives before thought: left knee down, right palm flat, shoulders square over the line of compression.
Grit bites the heel of my hand; mortar dust prints the whorl of my thumb. The joint is sound — older than the language in the air, younger than the trick it has just been forced to play. A pressure pulse is still shaking out of the bedding. Water below, vents cut for bleed-off; I can taste the draft through my boot-laces.
A man and a woman stand on the dais, robes settling like they, too, remember hydraulics. Their outlines are wrong under the gas-lamps, but that is for later. Stone first.
II — Read the Lay
The read settles behind my sternum like a plumb bob. Six centuries, give or take, yet the tooling marks line up to high-Gothic Moravia. Impossible, unless stone chose to lie about its passport — and stone under load does not lie. Courses pull true, headers every third, joint widths chased tighter than the guild ever paid me to chase. Whoever laid this knew that water listens; they built a floor inside a cistern and told it to remember both purposes.
Thumb to the joint. Mortar is not straight lime, nor modern Portland. There is a sting — almost coppery, but sharper, like feldspar ground too fine. I rub a fleck between finger and glove; it holds edge the way fine sandpaper does. New trick, old rules.
Up in the gallery, twenty-four cowled shoulders ease back from their stalls. Ritual over; walls start to breathe again. Vapor feathers low. Cooling phase. The slab's temperature drops but the brass line to my left does not. That difference is wrong enough to make me shift weight from knee to toe, listening.
III — Read the Brass
Brass should anchor datum, nothing more. Here it holds heat like a rod fresh out of forge, and something else rides the thermal — vector uncatalogued, pressure with no mass. My palm tells me the nails want to walk out of their seating but the floor holds them by reputation alone.
Across the chamber a man with survey gear shifts his stance, boots clicking off rhythm against the seam. He has instruments; I have skin. Same answer arrives by two routes. His voice cuts through the cooling haze:
Everybody off the brass line.
No argument from me. I am already clear, knee still on the cold limestone, hand still listening. The slab is quieting; the brass is not. I give the stone one more breath, counting the heartbeat of the cistern beneath. Water remembers. Floors remember. The chamber will keep its stories if I keep my palm here long enough.
I stay on one knee. The others move. The chapter in the rock is not finished writing itself yet.
