Arc I — The Summoning
Function Over Title
PD 606 · Day 2 · 07:12 → 21:14 — the east curtain, two saved braces, the wall holds, the title catches up with the work
Cole Maddox — read this rite from their side.▤The same event, another interior
Mnehmos — read this rite from their side.
The east curtain at 07:30 is the kind of work a man can love if he forgets, briefly, that he is six hundred years from the wall he was repointing yesterday morning. Bohdan does not forget. He brings the forgetting along with him as a tool. Stone is stone. Lime is lime. Six centuries do not change a corbel's relationship with its bedding.
He walks the second interval with two builders the city has assigned him — Andrius, who is older and has thirty-two years on this wall, and Daiva, who is younger and has nineteen. They watch his hands before they watch his face. He approves of them by the second corbel.
He runs his palm along a course that has been sitting two centimeters lower than its mate for not-quite-a-week. The mortar at the joint is honest. The course itself has been quietly telling the wall it does not intend to hold under sustained strike.
The horn lands at 09:14.

I — The First Brace
Andrius is the one who looks at him. Daiva is already moving for the timbers. They have been waiting on his read.
He gives the read.
Shift load now. Two timbers, longest you've got. Heel them under this course, one south, one center. Drive wedges till the seam sings. No one stays beneath it after the horn.

[OOC] :::systemvoice ⟦ braced: holds 12-18 minutes light strikes · unbraced: fails on next sustained strike · failure path: south-southwest, collapses inner walk 4m, kills anyone on it ⟧
He sets the lead wedge before the timbers arrive. The kit is in his palm — sledge, oak, chalk-stub for the seam-mark — and the muscle memory is so old he could be doing this work in lime-rain in a courtyard on the Vltava. His knees object the way his knees always object. He uses the objection. Stone respects a body that knows it is borrowing the strength.

The wedges drive home and the grain in the oak talks back loud enough that Andrius lifts his chin. The older builder has been on this wall thirty-two years. The older builder has seen a younger man set a brace well only by counting the dead.
Hands like that get drinks.
Bohdan inclines his head one degree and does not stop moving.
II — The Walk to the Next One
The all-clear had not rung. Cole was four paces north, with steel in the air. There was a brace at the third interval that was the twin of the one Bohdan had just locked. He could feel it through his boot-laces before he turned his head to look.
[OOC] :::action STRUCTURE_QUERY third-interval brace

He went to it.
He went to it past three ladders he could see were going up. He went to it with Andrius and Daiva moving behind him, mallet and wedges already in their hands without his having to say so. He went to it past a swordman who was already dead on Cole's blade and another whose name Bohdan was not going to learn.
Cole — brace here fails next. Hold them three breaths. Your crew: one to lamp, one to pry when I call. No one else up top.

The strike landed eight seconds after the second wedge drove home. The wall did the thing walls do when they have been told what to do — it took the strike, distributed the load, returned the cohesion through the timbers Bohdan had set, and did not slough. The seam where the new mortar would go later in the year was the only place the wall complained at all.
The crew that would have died went home that night.
Bohdan did not know how many. He did not, then or later, ask.

III — Function Over Title
The all-clear rang at 09:38. Bohdan stayed kneeling at the third-interval brace for two minutes after, palm on the new wood, listening for the load to come back wrong. It did not. The corbel sat where he had put it. The cistern fifty meters below the wall sent the secondary echo Severa had said it would, and the brace took the echo, and the wall did not move.
Andrius came up at 09:43 with a flask he had not declared.
Drink.
On duty.
Drink anyway.
He drank anyway. The flask was barley-spirit so harsh it cut his throat clean. Andrius took it back and did not drink himself. Daiva had been waiting for permission to laugh and had not laughed; she was twenty-five and not yet sure what laughter cost on a wall like this. Bohdan, who was old enough to know the cost was zero when nobody had died, gave her the look that meant go ahead.
She laughed.
It was the first laugh on the east curtain since the gate fell.
IV — The Walk-Through
Severa found him at 11:30 with a slate. The slate had names on it: two builders he could borrow, a lantern, a ten-minute walk-through window before dusk. He took the slate without comment. He spent the afternoon walking the east curtain end-to-end with one body north of him, one south, the lantern in the southern body's hand, his own hand on the wall at every joint.
He marked nine corbels for attention. He marked three of those for immediate. He marked one for will fail by morning if not shored.
[OOC] :::action STRUCTURE_QUERY whole east curtain section
[OOC] :::systemvoice ⟦ 9 corbels flagged · 3 immediate · 1 morning-critical · cistern below: stable post-echo · west curtain: not surveyed yet, recommend tomorrow ⟧
He set the morning-critical brace himself at 17:42 with Andrius and three workers Severa had sent over. The brace seated in 51 seconds and the wall did not complain.
The afternoon-critical work he assigned to Daiva, with two helpers, and watched her set the lead wedge before he left. She set it the way he would have set it three years into his apprenticeship. He did not say so. He left her to it.
At supper, Severa told him his word cuts crews loose on sight when a wall is ready to slip.
He had been doing that since the second brace.
The title had caught up with the work.
⟦ FUNCTION OVER TITLE · CONFIRMED BY MNEHMOS AT SUPPER ⟧
He took the loaf at supper and thumped it once before he cut it. Sound rang true. Bread holds. So will I. Ninety days is honest weight. I'll carry it.
The other thing he did not say at supper was that the wall was his now. Not by ownership. By the same relationship he had had with every wall he had ever set hand to — the wall lets me hold it because I do not lie to it about what it is. The east curtain had not lied to him today. He would not lie to it tomorrow. That was a contract older than ninety days. The ninety days were just the part Sebastopyr was writing down.
Mnehmos confirmed the function-over-title clause. Bohdan inclined his head one degree and ate his soup.
After supper he walked the corridor back to his room. Slow, because his knees were complaining now, and the knees had a right to complain after the day they had done. He passed Cole's door. He could hear, faintly, through wood, Cole breathing the way a man breathes when he is not yet asleep and is not pretending to himself that he is.
He kept walking.
He went to his own room and set the slate Severa had given him at the foot of his bed. He took the foreman's beer-note out of his cuff for the first time since the rite. He had not read it through. He had let it sit. He read it now.
Odpoledne pivo? — Tomáš. The pencil dot beside yes he had not made.
He made the dot.
He set the note on the washstand beside the slate.
He slept.
