Arc II — Stand The Wall

The Thread Goes Still

PD 606 · Day 6 06:15 → Day 7 11:00 — the denouement; one minimum-cost lens sweep per release, then watching the cavalry close, then the moment the architect's signature went absent at ten forty-eight

OperatorArcIICloseDisciplineThreadArdinDeathLitRPG

He woke at five-thirty Day Six and gave the lens his ten minutes of lens-rest before any sweep, the way he had on Day Five and the way he would on every morning of the rest of his life as an Operator that he could see from where he was sitting.

⟦ OPERATOR · ATTENTIONAL_CAPACITY · 3/3 · OVERNIGHT RECOVERED ⟧

The thread was quiet. Mnehmos was sleeping for the first time in fifteen years by Severa's order. Tibor's bind was gone — completely, not just slack. Ardin's signature was somewhere east, moving at a man's walking pace at the resolution his lens could read it. The cohort's signatures all read present. The room was the morning room.

He drank water. He looked at the east-facing window for ten minutes without keying anything. He let the lens know it had been seen.

At six-fifteen he keyed the morning sweep.

⟦ LENS SWEEP · EAST · LOW DRAW · COST 1/3 · CAPACITY 2/3 ⟧
⟦ VASKO · SWEEPING FROM EASTERN CAMP · NOT ON ARDIN'S SIGNATURE · resolution insufficient at walking-pace ⟧
⟦ ARDIN · MOVING WEST-TO-EAST AT ~5 KM/HR · 23 KM OUT · TWO CARRIERS OVERNIGHT ⟧
⟦ TIBOR · WITH ARDIN · UNHARMED ⟧

He wrote one sentence on a slip of slate for the runner: Two overnight. He is moving fast. Vasko has not refound him. The runner took it to the refectory.

He sat at the window.

I — Verification, Not Hunting

Renata's order at breakfast — at the lens for verification only, not for hunting; one sweep per release, no more — had matched what his discipline already wanted from the day. The hunt-clock had closed at climax. The denouement-clock was the slow ticking of releases up the east road.

He held the thread instead of the lens.

The thread had been the wrong instrument for the climax — too low-resolution, too slow to read mode-shifts, the wrong tool for Vasko's working at three-kilometer distance. But the thread was the right instrument for the denouement. He could read Ardin's pace, Tibor's presence, Mnehmos's burden, and the moment any of the cohort moved into a new state without keying the lens at all. The thread cost nothing. The thread had been there before the lens. The thread would be there after.

Brunna had already released at midnight forty-two when he had read his chest at five-thirty. He felt it as a small ease in the way the eastern part of his perception envelope held its shape. He did not key the lens to verify. He had no question to put.

When Anna's runner brought the slate at six-thirty he marked Brunna's release on his own private chart and wrote nothing else.

At eight-fourteen Krystof released in the ward two corridors away. Cole verified from the window without keying the lens: thread shifts, line goes slack, no need to key. He marked Krystof.

Marta released at nine-eleven. Same.

At nine-twelve Renata leveled to L3 inside the ward-round. He felt that too — the kind of brightening a thread takes when a person you are bonded to as cohort comes into a working they have earned. He smiled at the window. He did not key the lens.

⟦ XP +50 · Cole · thread-discipline; the right instrument for the right cost ⟧

II — Hana's Ring, Tomas And Liesel

He keyed once at noon for the Tomas-Liesel pair because that beat had a nineteen-second window in it and Renata had asked him to verify the simultaneity.

⟦ LENS · LOW DRAW · TOMAS RELEASED 13:32:00 · LIESEL RELEASED 13:32:11 · INSIDE WINDOW · BOTH ALIVE ⟧
⟦ CAPACITY 1/3 ⟧

He wrote the timestamps on a slate and sent them to Severa. He did not key again for Hana's ring at evening — the thread told him at eighteen-forty-eight that a wedding ring had been removed and a bind had gone slack and Ardin was sleeping in a barn. He marked Hana.

He went to bed at twenty-one. The thread told him through the night that Ardin slept three hours and Tibor kept watch. He slept the rest of the night without dreaming.

⟦ COLE · OVERNIGHT RECOVERY · CAPACITY 1/3 → 2/3 ⟧

⟦ XP +30 · Cole · the simultaneity verification at minimum cost; the discipline of not over-spending ⟧

III — Four Thirty

At four-thirty Day Seven the thread shifted in a way he had been half-expecting since climax.

It did not brighten. It tightened. The kind of tightening the thread takes when a working at distance has begun to fix on someone the thread reads as cohort-adjacent. Tibor's name was the first one his attention checked. Then Ardin's. Then he keyed.

⟦ LENS · COST 1/3 · CAPACITY 2/3 → 1/3 ⟧
⟦ VASKO · FIX ON ARDIN'S SIGNATURE · SHARP · ARMY ALERTED ⟧

He sent the runner.

He did not stay at the window long after. He had no question to put that the thread could not answer. The thread told him the cavalry was riding from five-forty-five. The thread told him Ardin received Mnehmos's dispatch at seven-forty-five. The thread told him Vera was on the return at seven-fifty. He marked each beat on his private slate and did not key.

At eight-fourteen Marek of Pelis released. At nine-forty-eight Old Janos of Pelis released. The thread brightened-and-eased once for each. He marked each.

At ten-eight the thread told him Tibor was no longer with Ardin. He keyed once to verify direction.

⟦ LENS · COST 1/3 · CAPACITY 0/3 (recovery overnight) ⟧
⟦ TIBOR · WALKING WEST THROUGH ORCHARDS · UNMOLESTED · ETA SEBASTOPYR DAY 8 MIDDAY ⟧

He let the lens die.

He picked up the child's primer of Sebastinum letters Anna had brought him from Ostrog-Below as an offering of thanks for her family's release. He read it not to learn — he had been picking up the language in pieces from Renata for a week — but to give his attention somewhere away from the thread for the next forty minutes.

⟦ XP +60 · Cole · attention discipline; the lens was not the right instrument for the next forty minutes ⟧

IV — Ten Forty-Eight

At ten forty-eight the thread went still.

Not slack. Not blurred. Still. The kind of still a load reading takes when the cable on the other end is no longer there — not gone slack into a release, but absent at the anchor.

He closed the primer. He stood up. He keyed the lens one last time at the lowest draw he had.

⟦ LENS · LOWEST DRAW · CAPACITY 0/3 (negative — drawing on reserve; will need full prayer cycle to recover) ⟧
⟦ ARDIN'S SIGNATURE · GONE · NOT RELOCATED · TERMINATED ⟧

He let the lens die.

He walked across the courtyard to the refectory. The cohort was already assembling. He did not need to read their faces; the thread told him Renata had stood up at the threshold, Bohdan had come in from the east curtain, Yuki had set the slate-map aside, Wren had handed the signal grid to her cousin. Severa was at the head of the table. Mnehmos was standing.

He said it plain.

"Ardin is dead. He freed eighteen. Tibor is on the road home — at least, the lens read his bind-residue at a walking pace west when I checked. The slate of the twenty-nine remaining is with Heralt. Heralt will deliver it to whoever inherits."

Mnehmos did not speak for a long moment. Then he said three words. Then he sat down.

Cole sat down at his usual place at the bench. Pia brought him bread. He ate it. He did not key the lens again that day.

⟦ MILESTONE · Renata and Cole both L3 within forty-eight hours of climax · Bohdan, Yuki, Wren XP in the high 700s; one more arc-beat reaches them ⟧

He went to bed at twenty-one with his attentional_capacity drawing on reserve and the thread quiet and Tibor still on the road and Ardin in a barn.

The thread told him through the night that the cavalry had returned to the eastern command camp at thirteen with the slate. The thread told him that Heralt had handed the slate to a senior officer who had read it twice and put it in a locked dispatch case. The thread told him nothing else about the slate's disposition because the slate's disposition was the next chapter's question.

He slept.
