Arc II — Stand The Wall

The Eighteen

PD 606 · Day 6 → Day 7 11:00 — the denouement; a man Mnehmos taught walks east freeing his binds at five kilometers an hour until the cavalry catches him in a hay-barn outside Pelis

He slept until six.

It is the kind of sentence that, in his school, is also a confession. Slept until six means was not at any working before six, which means was not the keeper of the morning hour, which means trusted the cohort to keep it without him. Forty-three years of practice had made the early hour his by reflex; the night before the morning had made it the cohort's by decision.

Severa had stood at his door at twenty-two hundred and said you will sleep until I send for you. He had nodded once. He had slept.

When he came into the refectory at six forty-five Cole was already there with the morning's lens-sweep written on a slip of slate: two overnight. he is moving fast. vasko has not refound him. Renata was at the doorway with her ward-round chart. The cohort was eating bread that Pia had baked overnight. Anna's third runner — a woman of nineteen named Maja — was at the breach with a sealed slate.

The slate was Ardin's hand.

"Brunna of Ostrog-Below released cleanly at midnight forty-two. Heart held the bind, not the other way; she died at one-thirty of her own heart, having spoken her grandson's name and the names of her dead. Tibor steadied the pulse for forty minutes. He has the variation. Moving now to the Tomas-Liesel pair at Brinsk. Ardin."

He read it twice. He folded it. He gave it to Severa for the ledger.

He said: He is working.

That was all he said until the cohort had finished breakfast.

⟦ XP NOTE · Mnehmos · this chapter's XP is at his own ladder; the moves are small and observed ⟧

I — Ward-Round, The Slackening

At seven hundred Renata opened the morning ward-round in the chapter house's clinical wing.

Mnehmos went with her. He had not been on a ward-round in eight years and he went because Renata had asked him to come with the line you might want to see what your week's work looks like in beds. She did not improve the truth. He did not refuse.

The patients in the wing were carriers Ardin had laid binds on years ago whose bodies were now reading the slackening as Ardin worked east. Renata's chart had four signatures — pulse, palm-warmth, dawn-cold incidence, bind-line clinical pressure. The chart showed the slackening in numbers; Mnehmos felt it as a working that had been keeping his attention without his permission for five days quietly letting his attention go.

Krystof released at eight-fourteen while Renata was examining his wife two beds over. Mnehmos felt it as a small ease in the way the room held him. Krystof opened his eyes and said, in Sebastinum: Doctor, I am warmer. Renata wrote clean on his chart and moved to the next bed.

Marta released at nine-eleven. The wing's tea kettle whistled at the same moment and Renata took the tea Pia handed her standing in the chapel doorway with the morning sun on her face and Mnehmos saw, for the first time in eight years, what a surgeon looked like leveling inside a ward-round.

⟦ RENATA · L2 → L3 INSIDE THE ROUND · WITNESS'S HAND UNLOCKED · the consent floor she has been holding all week is now a thing she can extend to a working under her own witness for the working's full runtime ⟧

He congratulated her quietly. She drank the tea.

⟦ XP +60 · Mnehmos · the engineer's call to walk the ward instead of working; the work showed where the ward was; the ward showed where the work had been ⟧

II — Hana's Ring, Heard Through The Thread

He rested through the afternoon under Severa's order. He sat in the chapel-side cloister with a book of his own school's old recipe slates which he had brought from Ostrog forty years ago and never re-opened. He did not work. He read.

At eighteen-forty-eight the thread brightened and dimmed in the particular way the thread does when a bind goes slack at a wedding ring's removal.

Cole's runner came past at nineteen-twelve with the lens-confirmation: ⟦ HANA · BIND RELEASED THROUGH CONSENTED REMOVAL · 18:48 ⟧.

Mnehmos sat with the book closed in his lap until full dark.

He thought of his own wife.

She had been dead nine years. She had worn a ring he had laid no working in because the working would have presumed against her, and he had asked her to marry him without asking her to be anything other than the woman she already was. He had not thought of the ring in many years. He had not thought of his wife for two months. He thought of them both now in the chapel-side dark, with Hana's ring three hours' distance away on the road east, having been kissed once in the Ostrog tradition by a man who would die in the morning.

He did not weep. He had the kind of grief that no longer needed weeping. He sat.

Severa came at nineteen-thirty and said come eat. He went.

⟦ XP +40 · Mnehmos · sat with grief instead of working it; the rest the council ordered; the discipline he refused to refuse ⟧

III — Cavalry On The Road

Cole's lens at dawn of Day Seven read the working shift at four-thirty.

The runner reached Mnehmos's door at six. Mnehmos was already awake. He had slept six hours by Severa's order and was making tea in his own kettle when the runner knocked.

He sealed a dispatch to Ardin in three sentences:

"The army has you. The cavalry will be at Pelis by nine. Use the morning. I will accept whatever you choose. — Mnehmos."

Anna's fourth runner — a woman of twenty-three named Vera — took the dispatch east at six-fifteen. She reached Ardin at the road junction at seven-forty-five. Ardin read it. He sent her back with a one-sentence reply:

"The morning is mine. Tell Mnehmos thank you. — A."

Vera was on the return at seven-fifty.

Mnehmos took the reply at the chapel-side door at nine-twenty. He folded it. He gave it to Severa for the ledger.

He said: He has three hours.

Then he sat at the chapel doorway and waited.

⟦ XP +60 · Mnehmos · waited; did not climb the rite-stack to brace at distance; did not break Severa's rest order; held the seat ⟧

IV — Three Words

Petra of Pelis released at six-forty-eight.

Marek of Pelis released at eight-fourteen.

Old Janos of Pelis released at nine-forty-eight.

⟦ THE EIGHTEEN · COMPLETE ⟧

Cole's lens read each one as a small slackening. Mnehmos felt each one as a body unburdening. He kept his hands in his lap and his back against the chapel-side stone.

At ten-eight Cole's lens read Tibor walking west through orchards alone.

At ten-forty-eight Cole's lens went still and Cole's chest stopped reading Ardin's signature and Cole walked across the courtyard to the refectory.

Mnehmos was standing at the table by then. The cohort had assembled — they had felt the shape of the morning. Severa was at her writ. Vass was at the slate. Renata was at the threshold. Bohdan, Yuki and Wren had come in from their posts at the news of the cavalry.

Cole said it plain: Ardin is dead. He freed eighteen. Tibor is on the road home. The slate of the twenty-nine remaining is with Heralt.

Mnehmos did not speak for a long moment.

Then he said three words:

"He did the work."

He sat down on the bench at the head of the table. Severa put her hand on his shoulder for one breath and then took it off. Renata brought him a cup of water. He drank it. He did not speak again for the better part of an hour.

⟦ TWENTY-NINE · ARDIN'S SLATE WITH HERALT · WILL BE DELIVERED TO WHOEVER INHERITS ⟧
⟦ MNEHMOS · BURDEN +8 STILL HOLDING · COUNCIL TOLD · THE COHORT IS WHOLE ⟧

⟦ XP +100 · Mnehmos · three words at the right moment; took the news standing; refused to make grief a working ⟧

At noon he walked alone in the chapel-side cloister.

He passed the alcove where Severa had stopped him on Day One and named him priest-engineer without his consent. He passed the door of the room where he had taught Ardin the bind-mathematics through the night of Day Four. He passed the threshold of the cistern where he had stood the brace through twenty-eight minutes of compel-working at the climax of Day Five. He passed Cole's east-facing window and looked up at it and saw Cole sitting in his chair reading not the lens but a paper book Anna had brought him from Ostrog-Below, a child's primer of Sebastinum letters.

He stopped at the cloister's central well. He drew water. He drank it. He looked east.

The teaching was now whole in two schools. The first school's elder priest sat in a cloister in Sebastopyr at noon of Day Seven of PD 606 having extended a teaching that had been refused for one hundred and eighty-three years. The second school's last guest priest lay dead in a hay-barn outside Pelis at the hand of his own army. The eighteen who had been freed walked or sat or lay in eighteen rooms in nine villages between Sebastopyr and Pelis, breathing without the cold for the first time in years. The twenty-nine who remained were on a slate in a soldier's hand riding back to a command tent where decisions would be made.

The book turned its page.
