Overview

Maryland Republican Caleb Andrew Bailey, an elected delegate for Donald Trump to the 2016 Republican National Convention, was indicted in May 2016 on federal charges of child pornography possession and production, illegal weapons possession, and explosives violations. He was sentenced to 16 years in federal prison.

Description

The investigation began in February 2016 when a package Bailey shipped from Waldorf, Maryland to a recipient in Wisconsin ruptured at a USPS facility in Capitol Heights. The package contained 119 rounds of .50-caliber incendiary cartridges regulated as explosives. Executing a search warrant on Bailey’s home, federal agents found an underground bunker containing unregistered machine guns, machine-gun manufacturing components, unregistered short-barreled rifles, other firearms, explosives, destructive devices, covert recording devices, and child pornography on electronic devices. The Trump campaign stated Bailey would be ‘replaced immediately’ as a convention delegate. Bailey was ultimately sentenced to 16 years in federal prison followed by lifetime supervised release.
