I — Position Fix

  1. The rite has closed, but the room still carries its shape in heat.

I arrive standing.

The first fact is the cloth. Rain-dark outer layer, wet through, clinging at the wrists and weighing the seams down my arms. The second fact is the cold inside it. It did not stay behind with the grid lines and the half-finished survey. It came with me. The System does not lie about that. Neither does my skin.

I do not look up first. I fix the floor.

Stone slabs. Keystone-aligned. Load axis marked with brass nail-lines that run too clean to be accidental. I know that geometry. I have laid grids on asphalt, in drainage cuts, under storm pressure and traffic sway. This is the same language in a different material. The chamber is built to carry weight, and the brass is still carrying something else from the rite. It reads warmer than the surrounding floor. Not by much. Enough to notice. Enough to matter.

Seven steps from the dais to the receiving floor. I count them without meaning to. It is not a distance I have traveled. It is a vertical read, a height translated into tread. Seven is enough to make the dais feel above me, enough to keep the geometry honest.

The room is broader than a chapel, smaller than a transit concourse. Long axis maybe eighteen meters. Width maybe twelve. Ceiling height is less certain because the vapor feathers low and the upper dark keeps the rest of itself hidden. I tag the first estimate and mark it for verification. Steps. Echo. The drift of the steam against the walls. I can remeasure later if the chamber gives me time.

The chamber is cooling from the rite. I can feel it in the air before I hear it in the stone. A pressure release under the floor, subaudible and slow, like a structure letting out a breath it has been forced to hold. Twenty-four robed summoners stand in stalls around the perimeter. Their shapes are still, more surfaces than people from this angle. I do not try to read anything beyond that.

The other four who came in with me are around the receiving floor.

One balances like he handles heavy equipment: feet planted, weight centered, attention moving second. One woman has an arm raised as if she is bracing against a draft or a line of sight. One man is on one knee on the slab, close to the floor, close enough to study it. One woman has chosen her sightlines and is using them. Chin up. Stillness with intent. No names. Only posture, spacing, and the fact that each of them landed in the same moment I did.

Above us, on the dais, two figures stand. One performed the rite. One stands beside him with something closed in her hands. I do not know either of them yet. I do know the way the room arranges itself around them.

I do not move more than I have to. Hands inside sleeves. Shoulders quiet. Breath small. Survey first. Reaction later.

II — Cold Load

The cold is not dramatic. That is the problem.

It is an ordinary cold: wet fabric, stone underfoot, air that has lost the heat of motion. Ordinary things are what cut deepest when they have time. I keep my breathing shallow and even. I do not waste motion on shivering if I can help it. The body will spend whether I direct it or not. I would rather see the number first.

I query the System before I trust my own impression.

The answer is clean. I am not changed enough to be safer. I am changed enough to be here.

I query the thing that is already costing me.

I note it. Four tenths. Slow enough to ignore for one minute. Not slow enough to forget for five.

The wet fabric remains the issue. Not the floor. Not the dais. Not the chamber cooling. The cloth is the heat-loss vector. The sleeves hold the rain. The rain holds the cold. My hands stay inside the sleeves, where they lose less.

I have done longer waits in worse weather.

That does not make this nothing. It makes it measurable.

I keep still. I triangulate the room again. Dais. Perimeter. Four arrivals. Seven steps. Brass line. One warm trace. One unknown rite. The numbers do what numbers do. They do not comfort. They organize.

III — The Asking

The man who balances like he handles heavy equipment crosses to me.

He does not crowd. He stops at a distance that leaves me room to step back if I want to. That matters. The question arrives before the touch does. I catch the meaning before the sound of it finishes resolving. He is asking permission. He is not assuming. The room is full of strangers and stone, and he still makes that small space.

I look at his hand, then at my wrist, then back to his face. Surface only. No interior. Just the position, the waiting, the fact that he is not reaching.

I nod.

The hand lands on my wrist. Warm. The warmth is human in the plainest sense: not bright, not theatrical, just present. The wet cloth between us keeps some of it for itself, but enough reaches skin to register. Enough to shift the edge.

Something narrow arrives.

Not a flood. Not a cure. A margin.

The cold loosens at the boundary first. It withdraws from the wrist, then from the seam where the water has been sitting in the cloth, then stops. It does not vanish. The fabric is still wet. The cloth is still an active hazard. The cold is still in it. But the first bite backs off. The body acknowledges the difference immediately.

HP does not need the help the way the margin does. The body still receives it. I feel the warmth settle where it can, and the rest remain honest. I am still cold. Less sharply. Not safely. Just less alone inside the cold.

The man lets his hand remain only as long as the moment asks for. Then he withdraws. I do not reach after him. I do not say anything first. I keep the record as it is: he asked, I consented, the System kept both facts.

My mouth is dry. The word comes out small.

Yuki

Thank you.

It is the first word I have spoken here.

I keep breathing. I keep my hands inside my sleeves. The chamber is still cooling. The brass line still holds a little warmth. The wet cloth still drinks heat faster than it should. But the edge has moved back a fraction, and a fraction is enough to count.
