Days 47–58 — The Exhibition

The Exhibition: controlled Dust unveiled to the village — and the foreign eyes that don't weep, but calculate. Team Kurikara is entered in the Chūnin Exam.

Dust ReleaseChūnin Exam

A village does not keep a thing like the dust a secret. It cannot. Secrets that large leak through stone. So when the Tsuchikage decided the time had come, he did not hide the heir — he displayed him, which is a more dangerous and more honest thing.

Refining (Days 47–55)

First, the work. Ōnoki came down from his terrace more than once in those weeks — an event that made jōnin go pale — and taught the boy himself, in the sealed cavern, the difference between a flicker and a technique. Hold the frame. Now make it smaller. Now make it last. Under that ancient, exacting eye Iwao's Dust steadied from the wild grey of his first reach into something disciplined enough to show in daylight: Dust Release: Honed Detachment, the second rung of a ladder the old man swore would take a lifetime to climb. Iwao did not rush it. He had learned, finally, that the bloodline rewarded patience and punished hunger, and he had run enough cliff-stairs to know the difference in his legs.

The Exhibition (Day 56)

The Hidden Stone threw open its lower terraces and let the village — and the foreign dignitaries the season's trade had brought through the gates — watch its genin teams demonstrate what a year of grinding makes. Team Kurikara moved like the single animal she'd forged them into; Ganryū's earth-walls rose where Iwao didn't have to look, Akemi's sensing threaded them through a mock-ambush blind, and the crowd, which had come to gawk at the heir, found itself watching a team.

And then, at the end, on a stone effigy raised for the purpose, Iwao showed them the dust.

He held the frame the way Ōnoki had taught him — open-handed, gripping nothing — and the Honed Detachment bloomed clean and controlled and aimed, and the effigy's heart simply ceased to be, a perfect cored hollow drifting away as grey nothing while the rest of the figure stood untouched. Control. Not the army-grinding horror of the legend, but a scalpel. The village exhaled as one. A grandmother wept. Somewhere a child whispered the Third Tsuchikage's name and, for the first time in Iwao's life, it did not feel like a weight pressing him flat. It felt like a torch being handed forward.

The Eyes from Other Villages

But the foreign eyes in that crowd did not weep. They calculated. A genin of the Hidden Stone had just demonstrated Dust Release — Jinton, the particle bloodline thought to have died with its last wielder's age — alive again, in a child, controlled. By nightfall fast birds were leaving Iwagakure for capitals that would very much like to know how a dead bloodline had come back, and whether it could be bought, stolen, copied, or killed before it grew. Kurikara watched the birds go from the cliff and said nothing, but she added a third lock to the team's training-ground gate the next morning, and started teaching them, without explaining why, how to spot a tail.

The Entry

On the fifty-eighth day the scroll came down from the mountain with the Tsuchikage's seal: Team Kurikara is entered in the Chūnin Selection Exam. The other villages would send their best genin to the joint exam, as they always did — part tournament, part diplomacy, part the only sanctioned place the Five Nations got to measure each other's young blades short of war. And Iwagakure would send, among others, the boy with the reborn dust, precisely because the other villages were already asking about him.

"They'll all be watching you," Kurikara told the three of them, flat as ever. "Some of them will want to beat you. A few of them will want you dead before you're grown. Good." She rolled the scroll shut. "Better you learn what that feels like in an exam, where the proctors are obligated to stop the killing, than on a battlefield, where they are obligated to start it. We leave for the exam in three days. Iwao —" the old look, the one with no awe in it "— you are not a demonstration anymore. Out there, the dust is a target painted on all three of our backs. Carry it like it's ours, not yours."

He understood. He pocketed the small grey chip his father had given him for the field, and went home to tell his mother he was leaving, and did not tell her the part about the foreign birds.

OOC · State Ledger — the engine's truth for this chapter

DAYS 47–58 · THE EXHIBITION · Iwao L5, XP 1200 (300 to L6). Learned Dust Release: Honed Detachment (jutsu 5/5; cap grew to 5 at L5) under Ōnoki's personal tutoring — the bloodline disciplined into a scalpel.

EVENT: public demonstration of controlled Dust before the village + visiting dignitaries — the Jinton revealed as a shield, not a horror; the legend "handed forward." Will of Stone holds at 10/10 (filled).

STAKES: foreign villages now KNOW the dust is reborn in a child — fast birds leave for the capitals; Iwao is a target. Kurikara begins counter-surveillance training.

PLOT: Team Kurikara officially ENTERED in the Chūnin Selection Exam (joint, multi-village). "The dust is a target painted on all three of our backs."

NEXT: the Chūnin Exam — written, survival/field, finals.
