Days 29–45 — The Work of Genin

The work of genin: D-ranks that forge a squad into one animal — and the eastern-road escalation that promises the work is about to get real.

MissionCaravanTraining

Nobody tells you that becoming a shinobi mostly means doing chores with your life on the line. Iwao learned it one rockslide, one runaway goat-herd, one tedious caravan escort at a time, in the company of a rival, an anchor, and a sensei who would have happily fed all three of them to the mountain if it made them sharper.

Kurikara's Dawns

She had not been joking about dawn. Team Kurikara met at the cliff's edge while the village was still grey, and she ran them until the gift meant nothing — because, she said, on the day your chakra runs out and your clever blood can't save you, the only thing left is whether your legs keep moving and whether the people beside you trust you to keep moving with them. She drilled them as a unit until they stopped being three soldiers and started being one animal with three sets of eyes. She singled Iwao out for the cruelest of it, not despite the bloodline but because of it: the strong ones learn to lean last, and they're the ones who get their teammates killed learning it.

He leaned. By the fifteenth dawn he could fight back-to-back with Ganryū without watching him, trusting the broad boy's earth-walls to be where Ganryū said they'd be. He could move on Akemi's sensing in a melee the way he'd once moved on it blindfolded in a cistern lot. He was becoming, slowly, the thing Kurikara was forging: not a cannon, not even a prodigy. A teammate who happened to carry a legend.

The Rival at His Back

The strangest gift of those weeks was Ganryū. Put on the same side of a fight, the year of resentment burned off like morning fog and left the thing underneath, which turned out to be respect with its sleeves rolled up. They competed at everything — who cleared more stone, who held a stance longer, who carried the heavier load up the switchback — and the competing made them both better, and neither would ever say out loud that it had become a kind of friendship. Ganryū still called him heir, but the way you'd call a brother by an old nickname. Iwao called him nothing, and watched his back, which between boys of the Hidden Stone meant more than any word.

The Things the Body Learns

Mission Ryo went into a tin on the windowsill beside the grey chips. Iwao grew — sturdier, deeper-welled, his three natures coming cleaner and cheaper as Kurikara taught him to mold without waste. He did not reach for the bloodline. Hold them like a frame, not a fist, and he was still learning what a frame even felt like, in the small things, in the trusting. But he could feel the lesson moving through him sideways, the way water moves through stone — slowly, and then all at once, in some season you don't choose.

The Road That Wasn't Routine (Day 45)

On the forty-fifth day the desk handed Team Kurikara another caravan escort along the eastern road — the same road the merchants had been muttering about, the bandits the first brief hadn't mentioned. Kurikara took the scroll, read the route, and went very still in the way Iwao had learned to read as danger. "Three carts. Two weeks of merchants too scared to use this road." She rolled the scroll shut. "That's not bandits. Bandits rob one cart and run. Somebody's holding the road." She looked at her three genin, weighing them against a thing she could not yet name. "Stay close. Do what I say the instant I say it. And Iwao —" the scarred jōnin held his eyes "— if it goes bad, you protect them. Not the carts. Not the village's opinion of you. Them."

They set out at dawn, into a morning that smelled like rain and something underneath the rain, and the easy part of being a genin came quietly, unremarked, to its end.

OOC · State Ledger — the engine's truth for this chapter

DAYS 29–45 · D-rank arc · Iwao now L4 Genin (HP 26, Chakra 41), XP 800 (200 to L5). First mission pay: 50 Ryo, 100 mission points (mission_f5d8bf7b cleared) + weeks of further D-ranks.

TEAM: forged under Kurikara into a real cell — Iwao fights back-to-back with Ganryū (rivalry now friendship-in-denial) and moves on Akemi's sensing in melee. Kurikara's creed drilled in: "the strong learn to lean last, and get their teammates killed learning it."

HOOK: Day 45 — a caravan escort on the eastern road that Kurikara reads as NOT bandits ("somebody's holding the road"). Her order to Iwao: "if it goes bad, you protect THEM." The escalation toward the true Dust awakening begins.

DUST: still unlearned — but the trust-the-natures lesson is moving through him sideways.
