Act II, Chapter 8 — The Rot Inside

The thread Iwao expected to run east turns around and runs home. With Akemi's sensing he traces the disaster's money and muscle to a broker wearing a chain of office — inside the wall.

He stopped bringing his weaknesses to the work

Perception 19 (Iwao can't track, so he borrows Akemi's sensing and reads the pattern). Dosu's model-driven turn gives up the inside broker. The rot is in the Stone, not beyond it.

Raido had given him a direction — the forger is one of the Cloud's own, gone rogue — and a direction is a thread, and Iwao had spent his whole life pulling threads. The trouble with this one was where it led. He had expected the hunt to run east, out past the last waystation into the dead country where missing-nin keep. Instead, when he and Akemi pulled it, the thread turned around and ran home.

What Akemi Felt and Iwao Saw

He couldn't track and he couldn't crack a forgery, but Iwao had learned this week to stop bringing his weaknesses to the work and start bringing his friends. Akemi could feel chakra like weather; she walked the lower market beside him with her eyes half-closed and named the residues nobody else could — where the hired men had gathered, which fence had handled stolen Stone goods, the faint wrongness of a payment that had moved through too many hands too quietly. Iwao took what she felt and did the thing he was good at: he read the pattern of it, the flow of money and muscle backward from a rainy bend to its source.

And the pattern, when it resolved, put a cold hand on the back of his neck. The blade Ren, the cheap reliable muscle, the paperwork that rode the doomed wagon — none of it had come to Iwagakure from the east. It had gone out from Iwagakure to the east. The disaster on the rainy road had been assembled, in part, here. Inside the wall. By a hand the village trusted enough not to watch.

The rot wasn't coming for the Stone. The rot was in the Stone.

The Factor's Yard

The thread ran through the syndicate, so Iwao went to its factor. Dosu had spent months smiling like a closing door and hiding that his caravans were bleeding; he met the heir in his yard with the wariness of a proud man who has just understood he may have been a fool.

Iwao didn't accuse. He'd learned that lesson at the report table — a Genin's voice doesn't carry an accusation. He asked. Plainly, the way he asked everything: who connected you to the muscle, and who handed you the paper that rode that wagon?

"Keep your voice down, heir." Dosu's measured calm had a crack in it now. "I hired men to keep the roads moving, and I signed only what came through my own desk. If there was paper in that wagon —" and here the crack widened into something like fear "— it passed through a broker before it reached me. Show me the name, and I'll tell you who wore the chain."

A broker. A middleman who'd arranged the cheap reliable muscle and moved the paper and let a proud factor believe he was managing his own quiet disaster — when in truth the disaster was being managed through him, by someone inside the village's own commercial web. Someone, Dosu said, who wore the chain — the small links of office that a clerk of standing wears, the mark of a man trusted with the village's business. Not a missing-nin in the trees. A functionary at a desk. A face Iwao had probably nodded to in a corridor.

Dosu had been used. The heir believed him, mostly, because terror is harder to fake than innocence and the factor had both. But the factor was a dead end pointed at a worse beginning: somewhere in the administrative marrow of Iwagakure, a broker with a chain of office had helped a Cloud-rogue build a war — and was, even now, almost certainly building the next thing, the one that would need no token to be believed, because it would come from inside the Stone's own trusted hand.

The Weight of Suspecting Home

Iwao went home in the dark and could not eat.

It is one thing to find a war on a foreign road. It is another to find it in your own corridors — to look at the village that made you, the mountain that was supposed to outlast anything that climbed it, and understand that something had gotten inside, had put on the chain of office and walked the halls and been trusted, and was using that trust to light a fire that would burn children on roads. He thought of Kazan at the mission desk, smoothing reports for calm. He thought of every functionary he'd carried paper for. Any of them. The chain of office is a uniform, and a uniform is a thing you stop seeing.

His mother watched him not-eat and finally said the thing she'd held back. "When your father finds a crack in the quarry-stone," Tsuru said, turning her wheel, "he doesn't curse the whole mountain. He finds the crack. He works the crack. The mountain is still the mountain." She looked at her son. "You found a crack in something you love. That doesn't make it not worth loving. It makes you the one who has to work it." She paused. "Quietly. Cracks spread when you shout at them."

Up on the terrace the old man heard that the heir's hunt had turned and run home, and that there was a broker with a chain of office somewhere in the village's marrow, and Ōnoki did not flinch, because he was very old and had buried enough traitors to know that the mountain always has cracks. He followed it inward when it would have been easier to keep looking east, the Tsuchikage thought. That is the hardest direction to look, and the one most men refuse. Good. He summoned a single, trusted, unchained hand — not the mission desk, not the official channel where a broker with office might hear his own name coming — and set a quiet watch. Eyes before blood. And now the eyes are pointed at us. Let us see who flinches.

To the east, the patient man felt the faint tug of his thread being pulled and was not alarmed. Let the heir trace the broker. The broker was a knife already half-spent; if he was caught, he would be caught knowing nothing that led further than himself, because Gomei the Hollow Road did not build chains a single broken link could unravel. He had used the Cloud's hand and lost it. He had a broker's chain and would spend it. And underneath both, the real second shape went on assembling itself in the quiet — the incident that would come from inside the Stone, wearing trust like a chain of office, and would not need a single honest boy to find it, because by the time it was found it would already be true.

The mountain settled around a crack it didn't know it had. And the boy who could not be owned lay awake, working the crack, quietly, the way his mother shaped clay — certain, now, that the thing he was hunting had been close enough to nod to all along.

OOC · State Ledger — the engine's truth for this chapter

ACT II · DAY 97 · "The Rot Inside" — Layer 3 deepens. Iwao L6, Genin, carrying Ōnoki's charge. Strict temporal: 3 required blocks lived + resolved before the clock advanced 96→97.

PLAYED BEATS:

• Iwao Perception 19 vs DC 15 (with Akemi sensing) — SUCCESS: traced the ambush's money + muscle BACKWARD; the trail runs IN through the wall — the disaster was assembled partly inside Iwagakure.

• Dosu the Factor (npc_8883fd84) on-demand npc_turn → reveals he was USED: the muscle + the wagon's paper passed through a BROKER with a "chain of office" inside the village. A trusted functionary, not a missing-nin.

• Family beat (Tsuru): "you found a crack in something you love — that makes you the one who has to work it. Quietly. Cracks spread when you shout." Ōnoki sets a quiet, unchained watch (off the official channel the broker might hear).

WORLD / Layer 3: the framer (Cloud-rogue Gomei) has an INSIDE conduit — a broker wearing a chain of office — and is building a "second shape": an incident from within the Stone that needs no token to be believed. Gomei treats the broker as a spendable, dead-end link.

THEME: the hardest direction to look is inward, at the thing you love; the boy who carries the village's eyes must now suspect the village. Work the crack; don't shout at it.

HOOK: find the broker with the chain — before the incident that needs no discovering becomes true from inside.
