Sandy Smith

Overview

Sandy Smith, twice the Republican nominee for North Carolina’s 1st Congressional District (2022, 2024), was publicly accused of domestic violence by both her ex-husbands and her own daughter. A 2012 judge granted Smith’s daughter a temporary domestic-violence protective order, finding ‘danger of acts of domestic violence.‘

Description

First ex-husband Randy Auman (married 1995–2001) told the Carolina Journal that Smith tried to run him over with a car. Second ex-husband Eric Goranson (married two years, divorced 2009) said he witnessed Smith drag her daughter ‘backwards down the hallway screaming at her,’ and that Smith tried to ‘bash my head in with the alarm clock’ while he slept, then broke through the bathroom door and chased him with a broom. In 2012, Smith’s daughter filed a petition for a domestic-violence protective order stating Smith ‘held me down by my hair and punched me in the face with a closed fist.’ A district court judge granted the order on July 11, 2012, ruling ‘It clearly appears that there is a danger of acts of domestic violence.’ Smith has denied the allegations and claimed she and her children are the actual victims.
