Paul Petersen was Arizona Republican Maricopa County Assessor who was indicted for human trafficking and illegally selling children for adoption. He smuggled pregnant women from the Marshall Islands and sold their babies. Although the children may have gone to loving homes, the illegal adoption scheme lacked proper vetting of families and exploited vulnerable mothers. Petersen faced charges in three states.
