Fred C. Smeltzer Jr. was a 32-year-old Republican borough councilman and deputy chief of Wrightsville Fire Company in Delaware. He pleaded no contest to charges that he raped a 15-year-old girl after getting her intoxicated during a camping trip with his best friend. The victim was the best friend’s teenage daughter. Smeltzer was sentenced to six months in prison and six months house arrest. The Wrightsville Borough Council accepted his resignation from both positions. The victim’s father stated to news outlets that he believed the sentence was too lenient for the crime.
