Christian Coalition leader and South Carolina Republican Party official Beverly Russell admitted in 1988 to sexually molesting his stepdaughter Susan Smith beginning when she was 15 years old. The abuse continued for years. During Smith’s 1995 murder trial, Russell testified about the abuse and urged the jury to spare her life, saying he bore responsibility for her actions.
